I think LOTR is another set of movies where I just got lost in the action too much to pay attention to the music. Except the parts at the very beginning, when it showed the title and you hear that infamous piece, associated with the scores.

Coheteboy, I think I found sort of a kindred spirit in ya, cause aside from being Disney fans, we both like really good movie scores and have the same tastes. Like one of those "get together and compare notes" kind of things.

Re: What's Your All Time Favorite Movie Score/Soundtrack?

I have a huge collection of scores. Too many to name are "favorites."

My very favorite, though, is still John Williams' score for The Empire Strikes Back. I even wrote a letter to him back in 1981 praising him for it, and he wrote me back, thanking me for saying such nice things about his music!

A couple of other favorites are James Newton Howard's scores for Grand Canyon, Falling Down and Wyatt Earp, and Hans Zimmer's scores for the last two POTC films.

I don't peek in the Music thread all that much here, so it was fun to finally find this thread.

Totally concur with this point and most of the composers you mentioned. The one thing I'd like to mention is sometimes it's not so much the entire soundtrack but just the handful of themes created for a film and repeated throughout that can really hook you.

Here are some movie soundtracks that rise to the top for me, sans John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith since their work would take up to many spots on this list.

Back to the Future Part III by Alan Silvestri
    The Incredibles by Michael Giacchino
    Star Trek by Michael Giacchino
    The Rocketeer by James Horner
    The Mission by Ennio Morricone
Shakespeare in Love by Stephen Warbeck
Road to Perdition by Thomas Newman
Tomorrow Never Dies by David Arnold
    Get Smart by Trevor Rabin

Also, I'd like to give a shout out to these CDs which include TV scores
Batman: The Animated Series - A recent 2-disc release by various artists
The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles Volume 4 by Lawrence Rosenthal and Joel McNeely
The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith - for your Jerry Goldsmith fans who might not have found this title yet
Varese Sarabande: A 30th Anniversary Celebration - I listen to discs 1 and 3 most often

Yes!!!! I love the Pirates trilogy. Hans Zimmer is one of my top favorites. And, yes, I know Klaus Bedelt did the first pirates, but Hans had a hand in it.

I can't pick a favorite, but my favorite composers are Bernard Herrmann (he did most of Hitchcock's films), John Williams (most Spielberg films and Star Wars), Nino Rota (Fellini films and The Godfather), Ennio Morricone (Sergio Leone films), Alan Menken, and the Sherman Brothers.

You forgot that John Williams also did the first 2 Harry Potter films, and the first 2 Home Alone movies as well. (He often works with Chris Columbus - the director of all four of those films)

Muppet Christmas Carol and Heart and Souls are also on the list. Plus many Disney ones too.
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

THe first Time I heard Bernard Hermanns Score for North by Northwest it gave me goosebumps. I liked It so much I bought a compilation CD of Alfred Hitchcock Movie scores. There are some other good ones on that CD.

And also I loved the music for Up.

Re: What's Your All Time Favorite Movie Score/Soundtrack?

    i'm a fan of composer Harry Gregson-Williams

many people overlook scores for video games, but his work on the Metal Gear Solid series has surpassed a lot of his movie scores.

another of his best works include Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas score.. i refuse to watch the movie afraid it will ruin the gem that is the music.

but while i am still a big fan, i can admit that some of his work deserves to be brushed under the blanket..

Sweeney Todd is my favorite Soundtrack. Other than that, I love the music played in the credits for Dark knight and POTC: At World's End. I also like the music played during At Worlds End when Elizabeth throws the rope to her father who is dead.
