Songs to put on an 11 y/o's Ipod

    Hey Music Fans,

Our son wants an Ipod for his 11th birthday next week. I'm going to just get him a Nano, he doesn't need anything fancy.

My bigger issue is, what songs to put on his Ipod. He already likes Rush since I took him to the show last year, but I don't want to bog down his Nano with every song.

I want to give him a good collection of "must haves" to give him a good taste of what's out there, but I also want to be mindful of what an 11 year old would like. My tastes in music when I was 11 are MUCH different than they are now. I don't want to put anything too odd on there, I want him to enjoy the music, and make it approachable to an 11 year old. Not sure if he has the patience to sit and listen to all of "The Wall" or "Dark side of the moon" or something.

Already he's requested that I put the "Rock Band" songs on there, which is fine.

What other suggestions do you have?

I'm already going to put some:
    Rush
    Led Zeppelin
    Pink Floyd
    Foo Fighters
    U2
    Green Day
    Linkin Park
    Metallica
    Weezer

And also some from the two musicals we've taken the kids to (Wicked and Phantom).

I'd LOVE to put some of my jazz stuff on there, but what 11 y/o wants to listen.

What suggestions do you have for me?

I know this kid and since he wants rock band I say throw some AC/DC on it. Also since he adores me he will have to at least one to two B-52 songs.

I don't know if you have already purchased it or not but I would seriously consider getting an iTouch instead of the Nano. My 10yo daughter got one for Christmas and she uses it constantly.

She should be on the payroll for Apple because 4 of her friends have gotten iTouches pretty much based on her.

I have an iPhone and I cannot believe how great the iPhone and iTouch are.
Maybe you folks can tell me though. Does gettin' two womenfolk mean you're the winner or the loser?

Yeah, he asked for an ITouch. But considering I'm still using a 1st generation 20gb Ipod with the wheel, he doesn't need anything more than the Nano.

Does that include songs from Funplex?

For an 11 y/o, I would've said Disney music, including songs that are heard on Radio Disney, but it sounds like his tastes have evolved into the teenage and adult range level.

Ghost Town by Shiny Toy Guns is a pretty sweet song. I also like Saliva - Ladies & Gentleman, and My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade. That song starts out slow and sounds kinda lame, but after about a minute, it really kicks into gear! Apocalyptica featuring Adam Gontier of 3 Days Grace is a pretty awesome song too.

I do need to add that the song by Apocalyptica called "I Don't Care" does have at least one bad word in it.

You better ask your son if what type of songs he wants to have in his future ipod...

I would say sit down with your son and have a conversation of what songs he would like on his ipod. How many GB does the Nano have? I'll come back with this question in a while.

    They Might Be Giants
    The Beatles

I'm trying to remember what is on JP's iPod. Hmm. He was finding and requesting songs that he had heard on Guitar Hero, so that might be a place to look for ideas!

    Okay, we also have:
    Oingo Boingo
    Weird Al
    Bob Marley
    old school Michael Jackson
a little Johnny Cash, a little Doors

    It's a mixed bag!
    A signature should go here.

I fully support this and MMP's list.

    My suggestions:
    - Tom Petty
    - Steve Miller Band
    - Eagles
    - Boston
    - Judas Priest (?)
    - The Police
    - The Rolling Stones
    - Possibly Heart and Pat Benatar
    - Of course, Queensryche
    - Muse

There will be "some" Disney stuff on there I'm sure, but he's not 5.

Not really. Although I have some Beck I can put on there.

That's okay, I have all of their albums already.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody, some really great ones.

I'll probably throw some Maiden on there. They were one of the first bands I thought were totally awesome back when I was his age. Them and Twisted Sister.

I was thinking Queensryche too MGB, but I'm afraid much of it will go over his head. I've got some Muse though.

I like the old school MJ, Weird Al and Bob Marley suggestions Susie.
