    Steve Page leaves Barenaked Ladies

Barenaked Ladies Plan Album, Call Split With Singer 'Positive'

Calling Barenaked Ladies' split with Steven Page "a really positive thing for all of us," co-founder Ed Robertson says the group is energized and looking forward to its "new era."

"We're really excited about the future," Robertson told Billboard.com on Wednesday (Feb. 25), after Page's departure was announced. "Certainly it's the end of an era, but things change and the creative process is always changing. We're really excited about getting into the studio and exploring that."

Page's departure, he noted, had been brewing for some time and "was not a shock to everyone involved. It was a decision none of us took lightly or flippantly, but it was something that had to happen for the future of the band." Robertson said that Page, who he's known since grade school, has talked about pursuing theatrical interests. Page is currently on probation from a drug possession arrest last July in upstate New York.

"Steve still has our support, and always will have it," Robertson said. "We're still intrinsically tied together both logistically and emotionally. I think you're going to see great things from Steve."

Robertson said he, multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearn, bassist Jim Creeggan and drummer Tyler Stewart plan to hit the studio in April with an eye towards a fall release, most likely with "a very fancy producer" he can't yet name. "The new songs we're writing are great," Robertson reports. "There are still four writers and singers and four multi-instrumentalists in Barenaked Ladies, so there's a lot to draw on going forward."

And the statement from the band:

    A MESSAGE FROM BARENAKED LADIES

By mutual agreement, Steven Page will be parting company with the remaining members of Barenaked Ladies. Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson, and Tyler Stewart will continue recording and touring together as Barenaked Ladies. Steven Page will pursue solo projects including theatrical opportunities while the band enters the studio in April 2009, and hits the road in the fall.

Page says “These guys are my brothers. We’ve grown up together over the past twenty years. I love them and wish them all the best in the future.”

The band also wish Steven well in all of his endeavors. Ed Robertson says: “It’s the start of a new chapter for all of us. Here’s to the future!”

Everyone is looking forward to making new music and thanks their fans for their support.
Thoughts??? How much longer do you give the BNL's???

Hope Steven Page and the Barenaked Ladies each find success in the music profession independently of eachother. They each seem amicable toward one another. If only the Beatles had broken up as pleasantly.

I saw them live once. I was really looking forward to it as I had heard good things about the live show. I was bored out of my freaking skull. It was the dullest concert I have ever been to. And it was a New Year's Eve show too.

I assume this means Ed is now the lone lead singer of the band now. I think part of what made BNL so great was the different styles of Steve and Ed. I'm glad to see there's no ill feelings between all involved and best wishes to them.

^ I agree. I always thought that if anybody would leave, it would have been Ed.

I have a feeling there will be a reunion in the future when Steve will realize he won't be able to make it on his own. At least Steve isn't making the transition with a big shaggy beard and chewing gum.

I was hoping they would somehow be involved with the opening/closing ceremonies of our Olympics next year. I'd rather have them than Celine Dion.

Re: Steve Page leaves Barenaked Ladies

I always viewed Steve as more of the official lead singer, so it will be interesting to see Ed have to take over full time.

    I can't imagine a BNL concert w/o Steve.

As long as he doesn't lie in bed like Brian Wilson did...

This is sad news. I have been a fan since I first heard them on Love Line in 1992. A thousand sighs. Their boxed set rocked my sox more than the new kids on the block.

I shall have mac n cheese in their honor while westing a green dress.
Anything listed on the park maps as an attraction is fair game for inclusion in the Rally.
I cannot confirm nor deny the inclusion of any attraction in the Rally.

Agreed. I love Ed, but their banter on stage is what made their shows so great. I'm sure the band will be able to go forward and succeed- the other guys are super talented in their own right, so hopefully they'll get a chance to shine and come up front more.

I'd follow Ed or Steve wherever they go. But mostly Ed.

Yeah I always thought it would be Ed that would leave too. But since that cocaine arrest...

The Christmas/Hannukah album is really great. I love that album because you can play it at a holiday party and it's equal opportunity.

Susie- Ed is hot. I always crushed hard on Steve though. Even his mug shot I was like "dang." (except I used another word.).

Highly recommend the holiday album, if only for the Sarah McLaughin special appearance.
