    The "Favorite Lyrics" Thread

Here's a place for you to post some of your favorite song lyrics.

Obviosly you can do what you like, but I would prefer shorter passages than entire songs. If possible, make sure to give the song and artist, and discuss a bit about what it means, especially to you!

    For example:

Operator, oh could you help me place this call
You see the number on the matchbook is old and faded
    Sheís liviní in L.A.
With my best old ex-friend Ray
A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated
    Operator - Jim Croce

He was one of the best singer/songwriters ever in my view, and I think this is a terrific piece of writing, displaying the twists and turns of the emotions with almost every word.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

"Sittin on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon
    Goin to the candidates debate
Laugh about it shout about it when you've got to choose
Anyway you look at it, you lose

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio our nation turns its lonely eyes to you...woo woo woo

What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson - Joltin Joe has left and gone away...hey hey hey, hey hey hey."

Mrs. Robinson - Simon and Garfunkel

Of course, this song makes me think of the classic film, the Graduate - and that scene at the end where the two young lovers finally escape the church (in Santa Barbara, by the way)...several great performances, especially by Anne Bancroft.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I'm better than your favorite rapper
But it don't take much these days for you to master the mic
Most of these rappers trapped in the hype
They makin whole albums, only half of it's tight
So they never really have an impact on your life
    That's why "3:16" was genius
    From "Murs Day" - Murs
    "Difficult takes a day
    Impossible takes a week"
    - Jay-Z

    Re: The "Favorite Lyrics" Thread

And I followed you into the party
That no one invited me to
But alone I made love to my 40
And played make-believe it was you

But I watched you forget your belongings
And belongings you've got quite a few
I filled up your bag with my longings
And searched through this whole, wide city for you
Two Gallants - Nothing To You

I love the way the words just flow. It's a very stalker-like love song, but still lovely to listen to.

I also like when they replace the last two lines of the first part I quoted with the following for live shows

But I got so damn drunk and retarded
I fell down the stairs and I puked in my shoe
Mainly because "retarded" is slang used by rappers in San Francisco, and hearing someone like the singer from 2Gs say it is really funny.

    Another from them I like
Well, I spent last night in Las Cruces jail
Rain and hail, born to fail
Nobody come for to go my bail
Sun, don't you rise no more

I shot one man on the county line
Took his dime and I blew his mind
Now I'm just sitting here, doing time
Sun, don't you rise no more
Two Gallants - Las Cruces Jail
I love how much energy they put into the lyrics at the start and the storytelling throughout the song. It's all about Billy the Kid, I believe.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.
Johnny Cash - Man in Black

Mr. Cash was a wonderful songwriter and to take something so simple as explaining why he wears black and make something like this speaks wonders for him. I can get behind him on reasons to wear black, and I like to adopt them as my own reasons.

Did you ever see a Robin weep
    when leaves begin to die?
that means he's lost the will to live.
I'm so lonesome I could cry.
Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could I Cry

The whole song leaves me teary eyed, but that verse really gets me, every time. The image of a robin weeping because he's lost the will to live is very powerful.

    Re: The "Favorite Lyrics" Thread

I have a song I love, I don't know who it's from or what's the title. I thought it was Punk Rock Princess by Something Corporate. Downloaded that song, like that song a lot but not the song I was looking for.
    Here are the lyrics:
She wears tattoos .... (Forget the middle but it's about how the tattoos are homes.), if I were her I'd tattoo my body until all my skin was gone.

    Anyone know?

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
    blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
    Wish you were here

    Brilliant lyrics in my opinion.

Some of my all time fave lyrics:

    Angry Johnny by Poe

    Johnny
    Angry Johnny
    This is, Jezebel in hell
    I wanna kill you
    I wanna blow you; away

I can do it to you gently
I can do it with an animal's grace
I can do it with precision
I can do it with gourmet taste
    But either way
    Either
    Oh, either way
    I wanna kill you
    I wanna blow you; away

I can do it to your mind
I can do it to your face
I can do it with integrity
I can do it with disgrace
    But either way
    Either
    Oh, either way
    I wanna kill you
    I wanna blow you; away

I can do it in a church
I can do it any time or place
I can do it like an angel
    to quiet down your rage
    But either way
    Either
    Oh, either way
    I wanna kill you
    I wanna blow you; away

I can do it in the water
I can do it on dry land
I can do it with instruments
I can do it with my own bare hands
    But either way
    You know where it stands
    I wanna kill you
    I wanna blow you; away

    Where did your pleasure go
When the pain came through you
    Where did your happiness go
This force is running you down now
    Getting you down now
Where is your pleasure now johnny
    Where has your pleasure gone

    Now
and what i consider the greatest Pink Floyd song ever:

    Hey You by Pink Floyd

Hey you, out there in the cold
    Getting lonely, getting old
    Can you feel me?
Hey you, standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles
    Can you feel me?
Hey you, dont help them to bury the light
Don't give in without a fight.

Hey you, out there on your own
    Sitting naked by the phone
    Would you touch me?
Hey you, with you ear against the wall
Waiting for someone to call out
    Would you touch me?
Hey you, would you help me to carry the stone?
Open your heart, I'm coming home.

    But it was only fantasy.
    The wall was too high,
    As you can see.
    No matter how he tried,
    He could not break free.
And the worms ate into his brain.

Hey you, standing in the road
    always doing what you're told,
    Can you help me?
Hey you, out there beyond the wall,
    Breaking bottles in the hall,
    Can you help me?
Hey you, don't tell me there's no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall.
Will there be screams when the sun sets,
    -=Is It October Yet?=-

Man, I've always loved this song...

Celine Dion: Love Doesn't Ask Why

    Love doesn't ask why
    It speaks from the heart
    And never explains
    Don't you know that love
    Doesn't think twice
It can come all at once
    Or whisper from a distance

So let's take what we found
    And wrap it around us
    Love doesn't ask you why...!

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Staring at the blank page before you
    Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
    Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else

    Don Mclean ~ American Pie

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
    But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
    The day the music died.

    Re: The "Favorite Lyrics" Thread

Here's a one I love and took me for years to learn the name of the song and who sang it. I love this one.

DREAMING OF YOU - sung by Selena

Late at night, when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I wish on a star that, somewhere, you are
    Thinking of me, too
'Cause I'm dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow, I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room, dreaming about you and me
Wonder if you ever see me, and I
Wonder if you know I'm there
If you looked in my eyes, would you see what's inside?
    Would you even care?
I just wanna hold you close; but, so far
All I have are dreams of you
So I wait for the day and the courage to say
    How much I love you
    Yes, I do
I'll be dreaming of you tonight
'Til tomorrow, I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room, dreaming about you and me
    Ah, ah
    (Corazůn)
I can't stop dreaming of you
(No puedo dejar de pensar en ti)
    I can't stop dreaming
    (Cůmo te necesito)
I can't stop dreaming of you
    (Mi amor, cůmo te extraŮo)
Late at night, when all the world is sleeping
I stay up and think of you
And I still can't believe that you came up to me
    And said, "I love you."
    I love you, too
Now, I'm dreaming with you tonight
'Til tomorrow and for all of my life
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Than here in my room, dreaming with you endlessly
    Dreaming with you tonight
    (With you tonight)
'Til tomorrow, I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
    (Rather be)
Than here in my room, dreaming with you endlessly
    <(I'll be dreaming)
    Dreaming
    (Of you tonight)
    Endlessly
(And I'll be holding you tight tonight)
    Dreaming
    (Dreaming)
    Endlessly
    (With you tonight) Endlessly
    Endlessly
    Dreaming
    I think it's a pretty sweet song.

ALBERT HAMMOND - It Never Rains In Southern California

Out of work, I'm out of my head
Out of self respect, I'm out of bread
I'm underloved, I'm underfed, I wanna go home
    It never rains in California
But girl don't they warn ya
    It pours, man it pours

    Re: The "Favorite Lyrics" Thread

Lesson Learned by Alicia Keys featuring John Mayer has been haunting my mind since I bought her new album a couple of days ago. My favorite song of hers thus far.

    He broke my heart
    And now itsí raining
    Just to rub it in
    Iím at your door
I feel so crazy about it
Youíll say I told you so
    You saw it long ago
You knew he had to go
    I finally came roundí
    Iím back on solid ground
Canít let it get me down

    Itsí alright
    Itsí alright
    Itsí alright

Yes I was burned but I called it a lesson learned
    Mistake overturned
So call it a lesson learned
    My soul has returned
So I call it a lesson learned
    Another lesson learned

    Sometimes
    Some lies
    Can take a minute
    To fully realize
    His tears
    Your eyes
    Thirty seconds to apologize
You give it one more chance
    Just like the time before
But he already know youíd give a hundred more
    Until that night in bed
You wake up in a sweat
    Youíre racing to the door
    Can take it anymore

I was burned but I called it a lesson learned
    Mistake overturned
So call it a lesson learned
    My soul has returned
So I call it a lesson learned
    Another lesson learned

    Life perfect
    Ainít perfect
If you donít know what the strugglesí for
    Falling down
    Ainít falling down
If you donít cry when you hit the floor
Itís called the past cause Iím getting past
And I ainít nothing like I was before
You ought to see me now

Yes I was burned but I called it a lesson learned
    Mistake overturned
So call it a lesson learned
    My soul has returned
So I call it a lesson learned
    Another lesson learned

Yes I was burned but I called it a lesson learned
    Mistake overturned
So call it a lesson learned
    My soul has returned
So I call it a lesson learned
    Another lesson learned
Her new album is fantastic but I love Love LOVE this song!
