“The Little Mermaid” ensemble member Adrian Bailey fell through a trapdoor just before the Broadway tuner’s Saturday matinee, breaking both wrists.
According to a rep for the show, Bailey fell some 20 feet to the stage during pre-set for the show’s first scene, in which a boat is lowered into view from above. Bailey was conscious and taken to Bellevue Hospital Center.
The matinee curtain, which had not gone up, was delayed about an hour, with swing Price Waldman going on in Bailey’s stead.
Injury comes soon after the start of contract negotiations last month between thesp union Actors’ Equity and the Broadway League of producers.
Actor safety had already been identified as a concern to be addressed, particularly for large-scale musicals like “Mermaid” whose tech logistics have become increasingly complicated in recent years.
“Mermaid” producer Disney Theatrical Prods. has an employee on staff to oversee safety for the show and investigate accidents such as the Saturday fall.
It has not yet been determined when Bailey will be able to return to performances.
