    New Nintendo DS Launched!

Well, Nintendo launched their new Nintendo DSi today

Only in Japan currently.. including two cameras. slightly larger screens, and improved audio. SD slot and online 'shop' to buy useless stuff.

Not impressed at all. Looks like a pitiful attempt at 'me too' to be in the digital lifestyle world. People aren't going to use their DS to take adhoc photos.. they already have a cell phone for that. The only thing it could be good for is head to head gaming, but that has been tried before without much take-up.

    Only Japan for now...

As expected, Nintendo has announced the new DSi at its Fall presentation in Japan. The device features a dual touchscreen layout almost identical to the DS Lite, though the company is calling it a "third platform," which means it's complementing the existing system, not necessarily replacing it. Looks-wise there's not much different happening, but it's some 12 percent thinner -- partly because it omits the GBA cartridge slot. The touchscreens are slightly larger, at 3.25 inches apiece, and there's an external three megapixel camera as well as a front-facing camera located on the inside hinge. The DSi has an SD slot and internal storage -- we're not sure how much at the moment -- but photos can be taken directly to the Wii Photo Channel on the card. Nintendo's also launching an online "DSi Shop," which will sell content directly over WiFi, including a free browser app and "DS Ware" game -- and the company will offer free wireless connectivity at "Nintendo Zone" hotspots located in Japanese McDonalds. The shop will take the newly-renamed Nintendo Points (formerly Wii Points), 1000 of which will come free with the handheld until March 2010, and content will be priced in 200 / 500 / 800 point brackets. The DSi will come in white or black finishes, and will cost 18,900 ($178) when it launches in Japan on November 1st -- the rest of us will have to wait until next year.

i'd buy it, the glare and brightness (lack of)/low visibility of my DS Phat needs an upgrade, though i was hoping for a major upgrade to the hardware (dual touch).

    *edit*

i just realized there's no GBA slot...how are we supposed to play guitar hero???

Eh, I'll stick with the DS Lite.

Maybe this will bring the prices down for it once it comes to the US.

I don't think the camera is "really" a gimmick though. What about for kids that don't have a cell-phone. They will love that feature I think.

I'm personally excited for the DSi and will be picking one up anyway (my L shoulder button hasnt worked in about a year anyway)

the loss of the GBA slot is a bit of a downer as i still play ALOT of GBA games though

Are we SURE there is no GBA slot? I just can't imagine Nintendo dropping the Guitar Hero option when they made such a huge deal for it's release.
I love my awesome crazy wonderful friends!!

Yea the GBA slot is gone. The room was used for larger screens and built in memory for built in browser etc...
    Everybody's got a laughin' place-
trouble is most folks won't take the time to go look for it.

What's the point in having two cameras? Shouldn't one be enough? Sucks that the GBA slot is gone (I play GH a lot on mine). Other than that, it looks nice, but I'm not going to fork over money to get a slight downgrade (GBA slot).
