Wii Sports the Most Successful Video Game of All Time

Well it was only a matter of time

Wii Sports is the Most Successful Videogame of All Time | VG Chartz.com - Video Game Sales Charts - Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Wii, PS3, Xbox360, DS, PSP, PC

Including VGChartz software data for the week ending 27th December 2008, Wii Sports has now passed sales of Super Mario Bros (NES) at 40.24 million units, making it the best selling videogame of all time. The game, bundled in every country outside of Japan and South Korea, reached that milestone after 110 weeks of sales

I don't see how that could be since you don't really "buy" it, well except for Japan and South Korea.

I wonder if they include Virtual Console sales with Super Mario Bros. and if they include it when they sold it in a bundle with SMB 2 and 3 (and the lost levels) for SNES.

super mario did not come with the NES originally.

This is a useless stat given the game is a bundle and has been since day one. That's like calling DOS as popular as Windows because DOS was included with Windows.

Super Mario Bros wasnt part of the original NES package. My parents bought me the NES when it first came out and it came with "Duck Hunt" and "Gyromite". It wasnt til a few years later that they started bundling Super Mario Bros. with the NES.

Gyromite? I thought that game can only work with R.O.B. ? doesn't make sense for a pack-in...

It wasn't the original pack-in, but yes, that is how it became the so-called top selling game.

Silly rabbits. Stats are for salesmen and stockholders!

Because ROB was part of the original NES set

You got the NES, the gun, the robot and two games.

Where does "Combat" from the original Atari system fall? All my friends had Atari and that came with it.

Yeah, the 'dual' duckhunt/smb cart came much later. According to wikipedia, there was a SMB set at the beginning, but the ROB set was the 'deluxe' set.

I don't recall the other set, but I was a bit younger at the time! When I got the original set, there were no 3rd party games. Excitebike was my first game - I picked it because it had customization (build your own tracks). I think it was an extra $4 too because of it!

Re: Wii Sports the Most Successful Video Game of All Time

I never had R.O.B. so I know it didn't come with the original NES (which I actually still have).

I remember my first games being Mike Tyson's punch out, Super Mario Brothers and Excitebike. Then I had a gift card for "The Warehouse" and got Castlevania. I had a little black and white TV that I would play it on.

    Ah, memories.

Re: Wii Sports the Most Successful Video Game of All Time

speaking of castlevania... it was my first title when I upgraded to the SNES and I recall being so excited for the stereo sound (which to that point I only had on my Gameboy).

R.O.B. was cool because the gryos were fun to spin up and play with.

In the full circle of life... Circuit City was where I bought the NES and my first game (realize we had to drive about an hour to get to CC). I can still vividly remember the case behind the counter displaying the games and then keeping the fold out poster of all the original games trying to plan out my future aquisitions

Then later, when it was in full steam.. we'd ride our bikes to the neighborhood Ames (like KMart) to pay our $30 for the latest game (I remember explicitly when I bought Zelda there too).

I dumped most of my NES stuff.. (even tho mine never really suffered the game slot latch problem) but I kept Excitebike and have it here on my desk as a memory of the first game I bought with my money. (previous Atari, Colecovision, etc games were all parents purchases). I also remember playing the crap out of Ikari Warriors and having our first real experiences with buggy NES games (Ikari would freak out late in the game)
