Would you pay $17,500 for a video game?

    Well, this guy did.

The $17,500 video game - Plugged In - Yahoo! Games

Considering it's just parts of three readily accessible NES games, and only has 6 minutes and 21 seconds of total game play, I'm not quite sure it's worth it.

The game in question is an ultra-rare, gold-colored version of Nintendo World Championships, a cartridge specially produced for use in a Nintendo-sponsored gaming contest. According to Wikipedia only 26 were created, and Hendricks calls it the "Holy Grail" of video game collectors.

The game itself has a time limit of just 6 minutes and 21 seconds and consists of three short segments from other NES games: Super Mario Bros., Tetris, and Rad Racer. Players are scored according to their performance in each game, and their scores are totaled once the time limit expires.

It depends on what this game can do to satisfy me.

But wow this sounds ridiculous. The value people slap onto certain things is comical...

I saw this on Yahoo. And promptly sent it to my husband. I told him if he ever spent that much....I would be forced to hurt him.

He collects Nintendo, SNES and N64 games...and I've seen him search high and low for rare games. He looked forever for one in particular...I think it was Mike Tyson's Super Punch Out. But, I don't think he's ever spent more than $50 for one.

It seems crazy to spend 17 grand on a game. But, I know that joy it brings my husband. How he can relive some of his favorite childhood memories just by playing an old game. So, if this guy had the money....and gets his kicks from things like this..why not?

Short answer...probably not, I don't have that kind of money. =P

However, I could see why some people would be willing to spend this much on a rare piece of video game history. Twenty or so more years from now something like that could be worth well over the amount paid. Wait even longer and it will probably be considered an antique!

    There's one born every minute!

No way would I ever spend that much for a video game. Even if I was loaded! Sure it might be 'worth' more someday, but that's dependent on finding another sucker... er... 'collector' who would be willing to pay it!

I'll have to ask my cousin about the rate of return on his purchase of a Wayne Gretzky rookie card many years ago... Paid $500. Maybe he's the one that bought the videogame?

This is more of a collector's item/variant. That said, the buyer's hardcore... and loaded or saved up for a long while.

That's a lot of money just for a limited game play.

I'd love to play it! I used to be great at all 3 of those games.

My short answer...no. I would never spend that kind of money on a video game in. That's just insane.
