Open Source Programs -- Free Alternatives

I've seen a few comments from people lately saying, "I wish I had photoshop!"

But, they can have something like it for free -- GimpShop (a hack of Gimp).

Need Microsoft Office, but don't want to fork over a few hundred dollars? Try Open Office, also free.

Want to experience the Tron lightcycles, playing against other players, completely for free? ArmageTron.

Want to learn CGI Graphics and Animation, that of the level that many of the major computer animation companies can do? Try POV-ray or Blender.

I love open source programs... many times, the programs are either as good or better than the equivalent programs that cost nearly $1,000! Best of all? They're free!

Many of the members here may not even know that such high-end programs are available legally for free -- so, here's a chance to let them know they can do a lot with their computers that they never knew they could do with such a low budget.

What's your favorite Open Source programs? Any reccomendations for alternatives to our standard fare?

Edit: Oops... this should've went into the Tech Lounge. Clicked the wrong forum. Please move...

If you need an audio editing program you can use Audacity

If you want to use Audacity to edit and convert to MP3 format, you will need the LAME MP3 encoder.

I also use Thunderbird, which is an open-source email program similar to Outlook. It doesn't have the calendaring part of it, tho.

Audacity is one of the most useful programs. I use it almost daily. How about the various versions of Linux, the open source operating system?

I haven't used any of them, but here's a couple cross-platform programs you may want to try for video editing:

    Avidemux (based on Avid)
Jahshaka (currently in the Alpha stage)
