good question, i think it is by screenshot but i dont know how to do that.
There is a program I use called VMK Pal that is free and it allows you to take screen shots and edit them later.

You can use almost every kind of painting program to do that. I'm not aure but I think you can use Paint,PowerPoint,and others..I'm not sureHow do you make the picture smaller?!?!

Look just like SummerinFL told you you go to vmk pal and download it and then click take a photo of the screen then go to the photo album and click crop photo i think then draw a box around your charachter and then save it to your computer then open it up again at the avatar screen

Another way to do it that does not require downloading a program:
While your character is on the screen, hit your "Print Screen" button. (it may be labeled something like "Prt Scr"
Then open paint or any other photoshop-like program. The picture you "took" with your print screen button is on your clipboard. Just use the paste command to get it into your paint program. Then you can modify it anyway you please.
