BTW nice guide for Hyperspace Mountain Jaybeth . Anyways I just beat Blast in Space for my very first time today and I thought I should share some tips with my fellow Micechatters.
First find a ship that you are comfortable with. I like the star tours type ship because it has a good shield and firepower level. Learn to maneuver around and get familiar with the controls. Usually when the "get this certain amount of points" types of levels begin, they put you in an intersection of the asteroids. This is very beneficial to you because you won't have to use the up and down arrow keys, but just rotate with the left and right arrow keys instead. If you see no asteroid actually on your screen, but there's one near you (indicated by your radar), shoot in the direction of that red dot. Though you can't see it, you can hear the asteroid blow up. Soon asteroids stop coming in your intersection so it's your job to fly around and find some. Also once you reach the required points, I recommend flying away from all the asteroids, stay in an isolated place, and let the timer run out. It's a safer way from being blown up.
In the tasks with the checkpoint space stations, you should get a good sense of where they are. Here's a hopefully helpful chart:
This is when your maneuvering skills come into play. There are some later tasks where you must deliver the cargo units or just touch all the space stations in a limited amount of time, and your lasers may be disabled in some. My route in the tasks where you have to touch the stations are 2,1,4,5,3. If you're not comfortable with this route, I still suggest hitting the 2 first because after that, the rest are just in the corners. Asteroids are flying around too so you should keep an eye on your radar and avoid the red dots. Also sometimes I found myself completing these tasks with about 15 seconds left, so don't panic that you have such little time left because you may, in fact, have a lot left.
Finally one of the most beneficial tips to this game: the powerups. I, myself, just discovered these recently. During the "points" tasks, there is usually a space station that is lit up. Touch it with your ship and a power-up will come out. Make sure you touch the power-up with your ship and DON'T shoot it. If you shoot it, you have just destroyed it lol. I can't specifically remember what each power-up looks like but I can tell you what three of them do:
-Gives you more health
-Lets you shoot a single laser in the front and back of your ship
-Lets you shoot about 3 or 4 lasers at a time in the front of your ship
Remember that the power-ups are temporary, so they won't last the entire level. I hope this guide helps all you having trouble with this game. Good luck !
