    Legal Ages?

Okay, I was just wondering what the age restrictions in the US are. Here are the ones for the UK that I can think of, how do they compare the those in the US?

    16:
    Sex
Leave home with your parents’ consent
Get married with one parent’s consent
Drink wine or beer with a meal in a restaurant
    Licence to drive a moped
    Can buy cigarettes or tobacco
    Can buy a knife
    National Lottey
    End of complusary education
    17:
    Start to drive
Leave home without your parents’ consent
    18:
Buy a house with a morgage
    Can vote
    Gambling
    Alcohol
    Marrage without parental consent

    Re: Legal Ages?

Most of these limits are state laws, not national (federal) laws.

Generally.. 16 is old enough to drive. 18 is old enough to enter a contract.. 21 is old enough to drink.

16-18 is an area that many times with a parent things can be done (say marriage I suppose).

Sex - that's a local distinction.. normally there is a age limit, and sometimes age delta restrictions. Example, a 16yr old could have sex with a 17yr old.. but not with a 25yr old, etc.

Driving - almost (almost) universally 16yrs. When you can start learning to drive varies a lot.

Drinking - virtually universally 21 now - no variances for beer vs wine vs food vs with adults

Tabacoo varies, but most are 18 now I believe

Lotto - varies I believe.. but probably 18. Not sure

Education - not age limited I think

    Voting - 18

    Gambling - 21 I believe...

Secondary education by me means you can stay until you're 21. After that, it's time to go...

Some people stay in high school until they are 24 or so years old in New York. I know that there have been several problems with the HS soccer teams here because of some of their players ages. I know that my team has played some teams that have players of questionable ages.

If one is not able to before the age of 19 in a regular, non special need, high school, they should just leave.

Legally though, they are allowed to stay until 21 only. Anything after that and I believe they must leave. And yes, here targetted age is of course 18 too.

    Another state law..

Federal law prevents the sale of handguns to anyone under age 18..

but states can allow other types of guns younger. Montana for instance allows 14 and older to handle guns.

Younger kids often handle guns, but age limits are going to vary with the locality (rural vs more developed states, etc).

18 is a common age for this type of stuff. But young kids are often taught to shoot rifles, shotguns, etc

^ nope.. the law is involved to decide when someone is old enough to 'consent' and also when it comes to sex between minors and people of age

    Re: Legal Ages?

The gambling age is 18 here in Minnesota. I know a few other states have that as well - so it is either 18 or in most states it is 21.

Also, you can technically start driving with a permit after a certain number of classes and passing a written test at age 15 as long as you have a driver over the age of 21 in the passanger seat.

At age 18 you can be drafted into the military.

    Handle or own ?

As far as I know, there is no age limit on handling guns. My 5 year old has handled a gun. Owning guns is a different story. However there is some state somewhere where recently a kid of under a year I believe wss registered and a rifle was bought in his name.

Looking at my NJ permit, it says nothing about age. Just that I must surrender it if I develop any of the exempting handicaps (mental instability, etc)
