You have to select what you want to NOT be transparent, using the polygonal lasso tool then go to image>transparency>outside selection.
Then if you have something like a heart, on a black background. You can go to image>transparent colour>then the colour that appears will be the majority colour, and it being black in this example, say OK and it does it.
