I was just reminiscing about the seventies again, and the most profound influences in my life, the music, the education, the family. And... Johnny Carson!

Of course in the seventies, I was not allowed to stay up past ten on school nights (at least out in the living room where the TV was). But come summer... I was an avid Tonight Show watcher.

Johnny was like a second dad to me. I was really bummed when they shortened the show from 1.5 hours to 1 in 1980.

My favorite part of the show was the monologue, I loved Carnac the magnificent and the visits from Jim Fowler (Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom) and Joan Embery from the San Diego Zoo.

Stump the band. I love that one too. The way he chided Tommy Newsom when he substituted for Doc as band leader.

When I wanna remember Johnny Carson, I cheat. I have a 3-DVD set called The Ultimate Collection full of great bits, interviews and the final show. Last year sometime I had some friends over and I popped in one of the DVDs and they loved seeing all the classic comedians and that natural, impromptu wit that happened often on the show. And the animals!! They came over another time and asked to watch another DVD in the set. I'll have to remind them they have one more DVD to see.

in addition to Carnac, he would occasionally do some other skits. Art Fern with the buxom Carol Wayne. And his "Aunt Blabby"

Oh, one of the more memorable episodes was with a lady who was to show Johnny how to repot a plant. It was hilarious! It doesn't sound like much to go on, but Johnny sure turned it into some great entertainment.

and in those pre-vhs tape days, I used a tape recorder to tape some of his monologues!

For its first ten years Carson's Tonight Show was based in New York City with occasional trips to Burbank, California; in May 1972 the show moved permanently to Burbank

He truly was a king of late night talk shows. ILioved when he had the animals on, he was a riot. I loved when he was included in the skits, and I loved him and mcman doing what they do best. Nothing today compares to the great johnny Carson!!

I whistle that theme constantly. That show was late night. Johnny's Tonight Show will always be the best.
