Late Night Talk Show Hosts: Who Reigns As King?

Several stand out late night talk show hosts to pick from. The genra has come a long way sense it's rise in the 1950's. The format has continued to evolve and improve to this day. I am asking for your opinions as to who reigns as King of Late Night Talk Shows.

I realize that they are in a whole different genre, but I prefer Tavis Smiley and Charlie Rose on PBS over any of the above.

If we are going all-time best as opposed to those on the air now, MB, I wholeheartedly agree.

An honorable all-time mention to Tom Snyder (the Tomorrow show) and to Dick Cavett.

For a public funded network, the quality and variety of it's programming is amazing. I look upon PBS and proudly proclaim, "ONLY IN AMERICA!"

Glad that we share a love for Johnny, Barry. Tom Snyder and Dick Cavett are wonderful choices, too (as all time faves). They were the "thinking man and woman's" celebrity personalities.

Carson was before my time, but I love seeing highlights of him on TV and on that Carson DVD set infomercial.

    I'm a Conan fan though.

Honestly, I can't ever remember watching The Tonight Show when Johnny was the host. Not sure why. It's not like I wasn't old enough to stay up until 11:30, and it's not like I never did.

The first host I remember watching was Jay Leno, who I thought did a good job. But my current favorite is Conan. Been a HUGE fan of Conan for about 10 years.

Makes sense. Carson retired 1n 1992, when you were probably in your mid-to-late teens, and by then Carson had been long since cutting back on his schedule, doing normally only 3-4 nights per week. But ypu also have to remember that he was doing 90 minutes for most of his run (11:30PM-1AM).

The one time I saw the Tonight show in person was when a college communications class I was in took a trip to Burbank. It was December 1975 - it was a Monday. Johnny never worked Mondays. The guest host that night was Glen Campbell. He sang instead of doing a monologue - this was not long after his "comeback" with Rhinestone Cowboy.

Knowing he doesn't count. (I don't think so) But I keep randomly thinking of those Howard Stern Live shows that would on E! or a network channel onetime. I just miss that at night.

Since CNN has a midnight replay, there can be only one "King" of the late night talk show hosts, right?

Re: Late Night Talk Show Hosts: Who Reigns As King?

I've never been one to make a point to watch Late Night Talk Shows. I'd catch Conan here and there when he was on the Late Show, watched Leno a few times, but I always liked Conan.

Now that he's moved to the Tonight Show, I actually make a point to watch every episode. It's just good television.
    What an idiot....

Yeah, I do that Twitter thing.
