re: Conan says he won't move The Tonight Show

Man... so is the NBC execs probably the worst possible job to have right now?

It's like having to chose between two of your own children.

I personally really like Conan... but I can see people's resistance to him in the spot that has traditionally been much more older audience focused. But I still prefer him over Letterman. Letterman became too darn repetitive for me. He takes the idea of 'repeating' and 'tie backs' to the point of annoying IMO. I never liked Paul Schaffer as the side-kick/bounce off either. Musician.. sure.. part of the show? Never clicked for me. I like the picking on Max better

If it were me gunning from my heart.. I'd let Conan run with it and let Leno have some project outside of the late night show (like my suggestions before) and risk having him goto a competing network.

The numbers don't favor this decision, but I think that's because of the sabotage of Leno's show and the newness of Conan's show.

To err on Conan a little bit.. I think I saw very much a direct continuation of his show when he moved to the Tonight Show.. and I bet a lot of people that had never watched him saw gags/skits they didn't get at all. Maybe a bit of a primer lead-in might have been more helpful for Conan on some of those skits I think.

Leno had a rough start as well.. and took a long time to build their identity. Conan came in with an existing identity, but one that may have been foreign to alot of the traditional viewers.

If it was my career on the line... I'd gamble and stick with Conan.

Gambling and sticking worked for NBC with Jay and Conan in the past. Wonder if they forgot.

It was definitely a bad move for NBC to put a turnoffable show at 10, since it makes the affiliates (partners, for the most part) angry. People watch the local news afterward because they've been teased for three hours about what will be on it. Dramas keep viewers interested until the very last minute.

This can be fixed by changing Jay's show to have some kind of build-up to a grand finale, instead of its current, "bang first, tailing off for the rest" format that is common for late-night shows.

re: Conan says he won't move The Tonight Show

You also have to figure that Jay has been stealing some of Conan's audience, not to mention guests. Jay had top choice of guests when Conan was on Late Night and you had one show in LA, and one show in NY.

For the first month or so of Conan's show, he was the only show and he was performing well, had amazing guests, etc. When Jay's show started not only did you now have the SAME show, people calling it The Tonight Show, but also the competition for guests having to choose between Jay and Conan ... not to mention Jimmy Kimmel.

If Jay really is seeing the light and will step aside, that's great. But IMO, who couldn't see this coming?

re: Conan says he won't move The Tonight Show

It bothers me that there are some reporters and a couple late night hosts who have said that Conan quit. True, Craig Feruson said he thinks Conan quit but he's not sure. Conan didn't quit. If you read the letter he wrote, he's calling NBC's bluff and saying, "No, I don't like that idea."
It would be great if Jay could get a standing gig in a Vegas resort and put some of his cars on display in a special showroom.

    go Team Conan!
Could be...but I heard either way they owe somewhere around $40 Million on his contract and will have to pay him. so I would move across country with my family for 7 months for that kind of boodle, I prefer Conan but certainly not loosing any sleep over his inconvenience.

Yah, a lot of headlines are getting it wrong. Either to get people to read or because they didn't read it themselves.

In response to Flynn's earlier posts about Jay's new show, when I first heard about it, I didn't hate it the way the affiliates did. But I really did expect something ENTIRELY different. A true variety show with scripted and nonscripted elements. Something akin to what you find on Food Network or something like that.

So when I saw the Jay Leno Show for the first time, I was like... this is The Tonight Show... but earlier.

It's just not what people wanted.

We can also go back to some quotes from that time too... remember, he was setting a time when he would have been in the same job for 17 years... he'd be almost 60. Sometimes people may want to retire too

From back when the deal was first announced...

Leno recalled the animosity on his show Monday, saying “a lot of good friendships were permanently damaged.”
“Quite frankly, I don’t want to see anybody go through that again,” he said.
Shortly after he signed his latest contract extension, Leno said NBC executives approached him, saying they didn’t want to lose O’Brien. He endorsed the move and set his own 2009 exit date, when he’ll be 59.

re: Conan says he won't move The Tonight Show

So here is a VERY interesting read today. Check this out as it talks about the execs behind some of these decisions. It also has some great quotes from the shows last night

NBCU boss Zucker immune to woes of Conan and Jay - Yahoo! News

I like how everyone picks on the 'people of earth' joke in Conan's statement. If that seems odd to you, you've never watched Conan much. Its great because it ties right into his skits.

But I like these jokes they've told

In his monologue Monday, O'Brien listed several options he's considering, including "leave television altogether and work in a classier business with better people, like hardcore porn."
Meanwhile, Leno continued to remind the world that he has always been the good soldier, yet still got hosed.

NBC told him his current show "performed exactly as they expected it would, and then they canceled it," he said in Monday's monologue. "Don't confuse that with when we were on in late night and we performed BETTER than expected, and they canceled us — THAT was totally different!"
    Great writing by both staffs

Well, it seems the whole world is a-"twitter" about this story. Bill Simmons of ESPN (who has connections with Jimmy Kimmel's crowd) tweets that next week is Conan's final week. How true? Well he says it's true, and it's on the internet. What more does anyone need these days?

It should also be noted that Jay Leno did just about everything he could to win The Tonight Show job over Letterman. That is, if the book and HBO movie are anywhere near true.

re: Conan says he won't move The Tonight Show

Just utter craziness going on over at NBC.

So far it looks like Leno will return as host of the Tonight Show.
Connan will be out but with a nice load of cash in his pocket.
But the deal isn't done yet, sides are being taken. who knows how this is going to turn out.

Here's the 3 P.M. update from Deadline Hollywood:

I've just learned that, for the past 48 hours, Universal Studios President/COO Ron Meyer was secretly drafted during this NBC late night crisis to negotiate a settlement between the network and Team Conan after O'Brien and his reps were threatened by NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker (see below).
"Ron is a former agent, one of the biggest in Hollywood. He could get this done, so NBC used him," a source just told me. "No one would talk to each other, and they talked to Ron. He got everybody to talk to everybody." The deal as sketched puts Jay Leno back hosting The Tonight Show, and Conan O'Brien exiting with a lot of money.
But there are still some terms to be worked out -- which is why there hasn't been any announcement yet. But I'm warned that "anything can happen" now that Meyer did his duty, and NBC is back in charge. I can tell you there are definitely people around NBC Universal boss Jeff Zucker who want to keep Conan in place at The Tonight Show. "But Zucker is digging in his heels because of the bad press.
He's being stubborn," a Team Conan insider just told me. Stay tuned.
