'The Hunger Games' and sequel coming to ABC Family

According to industry reports, ABC Family has acquired the network premiere rights to 'The Hunger Games' and it's sequel 'Catching Fire' set for release in 2013. The films will begin airing in 2014.

'The Hunger Games' debuted in theatres this past weekend with $155 million, the third best opening weekend of all-time behind last year's 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $169.2 million and 'The Dark Knight' at $158.4 million in 2008.

Maybe Disney should have tried to get the movie rights to this instead of John Carter.

Then again, they would have ruined the marketing somehow.

I believe the John Carter books are in the public domain, so no rights are needed. That is also one of the reasons why Disney is doing Oz the Great and Powerful.

In January of 2007 MiceChat reported that Disney was closing in on once again acquiring the rights to 'A Princess of Mars' from the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs to create a feature film. In interviews since Andrew stanton has repeated this fact and discussed his meeting with members of the Burroughs family.

I'm actually glad that Disney didn't get their hands on the Games. They would've taken out all the violence that's so critical to the story. Then again, I know absolutely nothing about John Carter other than he supposedly lives in the same world as Cthulhu, so that whole movie could be a bloodbath for all I know.

I don't understand; who owns ABC Family? I thought it was Disney.

I looked it up. Disney owns ABC Family, so Disney owns Hunger Games, right?

Disney owns ABC Family which is why this story was reported here.

ABC Family as stated in the OP above has purchased the rights to air the films on their network, they have not bought 'The Hunger Games'.
