Johnny Carson tops list of TV icons

...compiled by cable's TV Land network and Entertainment Weekly magazine

    1. Johnny Carson
    2. Lucille Ball
    3. Oprah Winfrey
    4. Bill Cosby
    5. Walter Cronkite
    6. Carol Burnett
    7. Mary Tyler Moore
    8. Jerry Seinfeld
    9. Homer Simpson
    10. Dick Clark
    11. Roseanne
    12. Dick Van Dyke
    13. Jackie Gleason
    14. Ed Sullivan
    15. "Not Ready for Primetime Players" (SNL) (I'm guessing the '76-'79 group)
    16. David Letterman
    17. Bob Newhart
    18. William Shatner
    19. Andy Griffith
    20. Carroll O'Connor
    21. Kermit
    22. Milton Berle
    23. Barbara Walters
    24. Michael Landon
    25. Heather Locklear

I would go with the to two.. then I disagree...

My list from these would be...

    1. Johnny Carson
    2. Lucille Ball
    3. Andy Griffith
    4. Dick Van Dyke
    5. Mary Tyler Moore
    6. Michael Landon
    7. Bob Newhart
    8. Jackie Gleason
    9. Ed Sullivan
    10. Carroll O'Connor
    11. Bill Cosby
    12. Oprah Winfrey
    13. "Not Ready for Primetime Players"
    14. Milton Berle
    15. Dick Clark
    16. Walter Cronkite
    17. Barbara Walters
    18. Kermit
...after that I don't really care... and these choices would only apply to the restrictions of THIS list.

Where's... Walt Disney? (of course) and Marlin Perkins (Wild Kingdom), and there a many more I can't think of at this moment, that belong in the top 25 before several of those above.

    What do you think?

I'm just 20 years old, but I've always enjoyed watching reruns of Johnny Carson.

I might not care for Barbara Walters, but she should be higher on the list.

And I'll never understand why Letterman get's all the credit, and Leno never get's any.

    Where is Mr. T???
He was featured in the print ads for the TV special, then he doesn't make the top 100? MANY of the other people on that list are not of the "icon" status of Mr. T.

I think "icon" defines someone that stands out in the crowd and is memorable years and decades after they appear. I bet you will have trouble finding anyone who knows who some of these stars are in 20+ years. But everyone recognizes Mr. T!

    That makes no sense.

Also, why include fictional characters? I would much prefer Jim Henson being on the list over Kermit.

Finally, I don't like the inclusion of "the not ready for prime time players" or the "cast of In Living Color" inserted as a group. Put the cast on one at a time... or else you might as well put "actors who appeared on NBC" as #1, "actors who appeared on ABC" as #2 and "actors who appeared on CBS" as #3.

Well, that's my 2 cents. I will be watching the show.

Well, while I'm more than twice your age, one of my fondest memories througout my childhood/teenhood in the 70's was the ability to stay up late in the summer in order to watch Johnny. He reminded me so much of my father (who grew-up in South Dakota) It was like hanging out with a friend every summer night.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend this dvd ...
The Ultimate Johnny Carson Collection - His Favorite Moments from The Tonight Show (Vols. 1-3) (1962-1992)
Also included is the 1982 NBC special "Johnny Goes Home," which follows Carson on a tour of his rural Nebraska homeland. I was so touched by this particular part, the "real" Johnny.

Oh yeah... Walt definitly deserves to be on the list. The man was a TV host on all three big networks and certainly is an icon!

I don't understand Kermit on the list over Walt or Mickey.

As it often goes on these types of lists, it suffers from anmesia
of much of the Earlier tv history, than the latter.

Re, Letterman/Leno, Letterman DEFINITELY is a bigger
influence on tv than Leno. Letterman's years on Late Night
on NBC and then The Late Show on CBS is definitely more
memorable than most of what Leno has done. Conan O'Brien
would almost top Leno ~ and when he takes over the Tonight
Show, Conan will be better remembered than Leno, as well.

I'll have to think this list over, and who deserves better placement,
it really seems to lack a LOT of people.

And just to add, WHY did they place a slot for SNL, THAT would be
an entirely different type of list.

Good point, now it's certainly notable that a lot of talent bloomed from SNL. Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Eddy Murphy, Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey. But ... ICONS? Yeah.. I don't think so.

    Because Letterman deserves it.
    And Leno does not.
    It's that simple.

As icon is being used as "Emblem or symbol" and not "most favorite," I'd switch Lucy with Johnny. The rest of my list is a tie for third, followed by a tie for 20th, followed by a tie for last.
Walt is not a TV icon, by the definition.
Who do you think of when someone asks "Who is best described as a symbol of TV entertainment?"
"Here You Leave the World of California Today and Enter the World of, um, er, California Today."
