American Idol Season 7 Discussion Thread

Welcome to the thread where sings come true - and idols are born.

Judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson will return to judge once again, along with Ryan Seacrest as host.

All of the initial auditions have already been completed, in the cities of San Diego, Dallas, Omaha, Atlanta, Charleston, Miami, and Philadelphia. The first show of the season, January 15th, will cover the Philadelphia and Dallas auditions.

A few changes will be made to the show this season. It has been announced that the contestants will be able to show off other musical talents by playing instruments, such as the guitar. There will be many fewer "mentors" than previous seasons; in the past, established music stars such as Diana Ross and Tony Bennett would appear every week and take the attention away from the contestants. And I hear that the Hollywood phase of the show will include something different this year, although just what I do not know.

Myself, I'm looking forward to laughing at horrendous auditioners who think they are great singers, making fun of Paula and her fluffy commentary, and voting and rooting for my favorite idol. May the embarrassment that was Sanjaya of last season ne'er be repeated again.

Edit: You can view the commercial for the premiere at this link.

Re: American Idol Season 7 Discussion Thread

You read my mind, I was just going to start a thread for AI since it starts in a week!!!

I am glad they will allow contestants to play an instrument if they are able, should be a nice change. They celebrity guests limitation will be helpful as well, I usually can't stand 80% of the guests they have on. I am so looking forward to this season as there is much crap on TV right now, at least AI is entertaining crap!

I don't think we will see anyone of Sanjaya's talents or stage presence anytime soon (I hope).

BTW will Ryan have writers or will have have to make it all up as he goes?

I don't know for sure if Seacrest has a script or if he ad libs, but in seasons past it sounds like it's mostly the latter - especially when he chats with the contestants.

I like Idol BUT I can do without the bad singing - 2 hours every night for a week - yikes! I can't stand that much - but I like to pick out the good ones - I guess it's take good with the bad - I'd like to see more of the second part of the auditions, those seem to get pared down too much

The bad singing is the only way I can get Hubby to watch, then he usually finds a favorite of the good ones and has to watch till they get kicked off. My daughter started watching last year and really liked the show too, so now its a family event.

Hmmm....debating whether even to watch or not after last year. I even found the auditions tiresome last year....

I heard there were changes, and I was hoping it would be a better voting system (so we don't get stuck with another Sanjaya). Guess it is just about instruments.

I really can't watch all the early auditions. There is only too much bad pi$$ed off people I can stand.

I like the fact that the contestants had the ability to audition with musical instruments and REALLY like the fact that celebrity mentors won't take over this season.

I really hope there's a better voting system this year too.
And I like the idea of playing instruments, as long as it's not overdone.
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

I agree the voting system sucks (which is why I rarely vote, unless I think my 1 or 2 votes will make a real difference). I am not sure what they can doi really though for voting. No matter why they set up someone will find a way to hack it.

At least by the final 3 or 4 I think its pretty fair.

Although I wasn't as into it last year as much as I have been in years past, I am still looking forward to this!

I love the selection process (i.e. horrid auditions) and it's fun to see who you think will make it right from the get-go.

I do hate the voting glitches though. Having poopy singers make it so far while others get ousted prematurely seems unfair. But as MollyTrolly said, it evens out for the most part by the end.
I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it.
That explains the trouble that I'm always in...

For all you Taylor Hickys, did you hear that he is the only Idol to not sell a million copies of their debut CD. (as heard on Fox11 in LA).
