Tribute to Epcot's Horizons

Our amazing Disney and More partner, Alain Littaye, has posted a really fantastic tribute to one of Epcot's long gone, but not forgotten attractions, Horizons. Lots of photos, video, and commentary. I really miss this one.

by Alain Littaye of Disney and More blog:
Today, we have a grand tribute to Epcot beloved extinct attraction and one of my favorites: Horizons. And this one is going to be a really big tribute with lot of pictures, plenty of artwork, and a great video of the whole ride at the end of the article including the links to the previous Epcot original attractions artwork articles.

Horizons, designed by imagineer George McGinnis and Collin Campbell opened on October 1, 1983 and was about the future!... more specifically, Horizons was dedicated to "humanity's future" with this principle "If we can dream it, we can do it!".

Not only was the building huge, but the 14.45 minute ride was one of the longest ones ever created by Walt Disney Imagineering. 54 audio-animatronics, and 770 props all along the ride, not to mention the 12 film projectors, the two Omnisphere screenshow, and a huge capacity of 2784 guests per hour. Everything was great: the story line, the theming, the music, everything!

During 10 years - from 1983 to 1993 - the attraction sponsor was General Electric, as we can see on this picture of the entrance.

see part 2 of the video and a scene by scene ride description with photos at the link below.

Re: Tribute to Epcot's Horizons

I'm so nostalgic for the old EPCOT. Back when it had a unified vision and theme. There have been many positive signs at Epcot lately. I only hope that it gets its mojo back soon.

Thank you for the memories Alain!

Re: Tribute to Epcot's Horizons

This is easily in my top 5 most missed attractions at WDW. It might even make the top 3. World of Motion and Horizons were just pure EPCOT Center in every way. It's a shame they had to go.

Thanks for the great memories!

Great post ... I also enjoyed Horizons I was able to see it during 4 different trips to WDW before it went away. I agree that this attraction was pure EPCOT Center.

Re: Tribute to Epcot's Horizons

WOW! THAT is what Tommorwland should feel like! I went to Epcot on my honeymoon back in 1995, but I don't remember visiting Horizions. Fantastic ride, and a wonderful way to relax after doing a LOT of walking.
