Using DVC Points for Non-Disney Resorts

Hello,

My husband and I just put in a resale bid on an SSR timeshare. We live in CA and recently took our 3 year old to Disneyland for the first time, and ended up going to the timeshare presentation. We were blown away by the presentation, but are now having second thoughts on our purchase. We have a few days to back out of the contract.

Here is my question: How difficult is it to book non-Disney resorts, such as resorts in Mexico, Hawaii, Bahamas, etc. We usually book our summer vacations 3 or 4 months in advance. We will MOSTLY be using our points at NON DVC resorts. I'm sure we'll do a few trips to WDW in our lifetime.

Should we back out? Our concern is that, since we will barely be going to WDW, will we be able to get into the non-disney properties w/o a problem? We usually stay at high end resorts, such as Four Seasons, etc...

Any thoughts would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

I can only say that when we have used our points to book other non Disney destinations we've never had any problem apart from one date not being available and they offered us a perfectly acceptable alternative. In fact the only problems we have ever had is trying to book Disneyland Resort Paris. Because they are still only part owned by Disney they only release blocks of dates. They don't have any DVC units so have to use their hotel rooms. Twice we have had kick backs with them. You have to be a little flexible and be prepared to book more in advance. With the Interval International it can be up to as much as 2 years. The Concierge collection is a little limited but must surely expand as time goes by.

Anybody else want to chip in on this?

Points charts are subject to change. The charts presented here are believed to be accurate as of the date of posting but are subject to adjustment by Disney Vacation Club. This site makes no guarantees as to the current accuracy of these points charts. Members should contact DVC Member Services to confirm the price of their itinerary prior to making a reservation.
DVC points used to make reservations in The Disney Collection are converted into what are called Reservation Points. Reservations at destinations within The Disney Collection are subject to a $95 booking fee, EXCEPT for reservations at Disneyland (California) resorts.
Most destinations within The Disney Collection must be made prior to 120 days before the end of the member's Use Year. The stay may occur right up until the end of the Use Year, but the reservation must be secured more than 120 days before the end of the Use year.
All reservations are subject to availability.
(*Other DCL cruises are eligible to be booked using DVC points--a sampling of popular cruises are presented here for illustration.)
