![]() | Interesting Phantom Manor discovery Whilst researching for a school art project, I stumbled upon a painting. This painting, titled 'House by the Railroad' (1925), by Edward Hopper has such a strong resemblance to the Phantom Manor, that I had to post it on here. ![]() ![]() Is this close resemblance more than just a coincidence? Is it possible that this painting was seen by Imagineers, and inspired the facade that we now see in DLP?

![]() | Re: Interesting Phantom Manor discovery Looks awful similar but it could just be a similar kind of house design rather than a direct inspiration. Question is, did the house by the railroad have a talking head in a glass bowl? Probably not. Looks like PM wins...

![]() | Re: Interesting Phantom Manor discovery Finally, something that isn't Thomas Kinkade. Actually, the Psycho house, which everyone is always quick to point out upon seeing Phantom Manor, was based on this painting. Fun facts. It's a nice painting though, isn't it? |

![]() | Re: Interesting Phantom Manor discovery i don't see a striking resembalance, just similar architecture from the same period. a lot of houses would've looked like this back then.

![]() | Re: Interesting Phantom Manor discovery I would say that the painting influenced a closer influence to the actual influence of PM (I may be under the influence). What I am trying to say is that IMO PM looks more like the abode of Norman Bates and his mother than that painting although I do admit there is a strong resemblance in certain areas.

![]() | Re: Interesting Phantom Manor discovery Here is one of the real references for PM according to some WDI folks I know: General - Fourth Ward School Virginia City (between Lake Tahoe and Reno) was a huge inspiration for much of Frontierland. I love VC so much, I had to take my wife when we got married in Lake Tahoe. |

![]() | Re: Interesting Phantom Manor discovery I love this subject. You know what's fun? Mid-19th century: Napoleon III has Baron Haussmann rebuild much of Paris. He has a great deal of Medieval buildings torn down to make way for the Paris we know today: wide, straight avenues lined with Mansard-roofed buildings. The style catches on in the rest of the world and becomes known as "Second Empire" architecture. Enter the Mansard-roofed gingerbread architecture in the American west (and Australia, and to a lesser extent elsewhere.) Mid-20th century: Edward Hopper, Alfred Hitchcock and apparently Imagineer Harper Goff all draw on the style for foreboding mansions. 1992: The style comes back to Paris — in an utterly Americanized form. It's kind of a full-circle thing when you think about it. |

![]() | Re: Interesting Phantom Manor discovery Its always a possiblity inspiration came from the painting. End of the day when WDI were building DLRP it went to many areas for inspiration. Just take a look at the Castle Imagineers looked at many European Castle designs. |

![]() | Re: Interesting Phantom Manor discovery it wasn't Haunted Mansion at Disneyland CA, there were ideas to put a nother street on Main St and then a really dirty scary house on a hill. But Walt Disney wanted it to be nice on the outside and in his words let the ghosts take care of the inside. |
