Space Mountain Mission 2: why is it hated so much?

I like SMM2, and sometimes I wonder why everyone else hates it. It's the same coaster, maybe even smoother and better. There are cool projections (the comet collision is really good) and the music is suited to this new ride. Sure, the music is NOT 1995 Discoveryland, but neither is any Discoveryland attraction now (except Nautilus). While Discoveryland is changing, so did SM and the whole ride now suits the land. In fact, I actually feel the new music is better than the old one.

It's that very change that a lot of people lament.

Also, that music is a big deal. In the old days, I got nauseous on it but found the audio to be fantastic. Now I just get nauseous.

No, actually, the new Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear are the only things which disrupt the theme of the land.

What about Star tours (yells retro future)? Pizza Planet? Autopia (50's anyone?)? I understand your point Speedway, I prefer the old style Discoveryland and was distraught at the news of change, but I was pleasantly suprised with SMM2.

That's because they haven't enough money to paint the whole land purple and silver.

Okay, I may be slightly bitter, but they've already started to re-paint ODVs and butchered the park's best gift shop*.

*Constellations; ceiling featuring Disneyfied constellations -> painted over with blue and stars. Moving display of Da Vinci sketch vehicle with Disney characters in it -> statue of Buzz. Well-balanced, quality logo with Mickey Mouse and a telescope -> stock image of Buzz. Well-balanced colour scheme and design ornaments on building -> Big fat mess.

I do like the effects

but the building does not fit the story and themeing anymore...

and that's a pitty for such an exspencive attraction

the tunnel on re-entry and burning rocks are cool, so is the new launch from the bottom of the cannon,

they just removed all the cool victorian theming and score which made the ride, - its a shame

oh, and while im at it, that cool planet with the orbiting mini train which used to be above the entrance has gone too, i liked that

its not smoother though, if anything it feels worse.

Then why just keep the new effects, drop "2" from the name (stupid idea), and then bring back the old music - everyone is happy then!

I heard it is hated because it is another part of the breaking away from the original theme of the land (along with the closing of Le Visionarium) and its music is different, and its the same track just different elements.

indeed, of the promise that Disney made to the French governement to make the French Tomorrowland a Discoveryland with famous French and European visonairs, is nothing left than some buildings, but no story anymore.

Le Visionarium was the entry attraction to the Discoveryland story.

Space Mountain was the center piece, and The Nautilus is the underdog.

The Nautilus is probably the last thing that will stay like it is today, they can not really make something different with it, they can only close the thing.

In the beginning we in Europe thought that we won't have the classic Tomorrowland problem, different attractions, no real story line, no single kind of architecture. No, Paris got a unique Tomorrowland, one with a true story and history. And now fifteen years later, nothing is left.

Imagineers should get a veto vote when parks want to close or build new attractions. And maybe they have to consider to let out the tomorrowland in the next magic kingdom.

Mission 2 is a misfire. Bland to say the least in comparison to the original "De la Terre.." version. The music is my main problem...or lack of it. The track is not any better than before... you get banged up quite a lot.

The "2" will be removed at the end of the Happiest Celebration on Earth.

Saying that, you wouldn't even know there was a HCOE going on at Disneyland Paris - okay let me rephrase my above quote.

The "2" will be removed when the the Happiest Celebration on Earth ends at the Walt Disney World Resort.

If there's no "2" will it just be called Space Mountain. If so then there will be nothing in the name to show it is different from all the other SMs. That sucks!

If you could, money no object, what would change to make your Discoveryland perfect?

I would return it to the Discoveryland of 1992 - pre-Space Mountain.
After that is done, I would make sure Discovery Mountain is built instead, and more Discovery Bay influences are put in.

Discovery Mountain would be integrated into the nightly fireworks display above the castle, with light shows etc. The same will be done for Big Thunder Mountain, so you could watch Fantasy in the Sky from three points in the park.

A more cohesive storyline would be put in to bring the land more together, like Thunder Mesa does with Frontierland.

Or rip out Autopia and build DM there. Filled with JTTCOTE & 20K goodness from TDS.
