20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Nautilus)

During my first visit the squid attack was a big let down (judging from the lack of people, it really isn't popular attraction either).

I am not sure how it is suppose to work, but the version I got had the squid move forward and back, in sort of 90 degree angle. When it got in front of window it sort of moved to attack and spiel begun in french, resulting squid getting electrification and retreating.

I wonder was it lightning malfunctioning or something...but I could see the squid all the time. In its resting postion at far left, and when it moved slowly to its "attack" position. The iris closed only for few seconds in between, not sure what it is suppose to do.

I wonder if the squid model is the same that is used in Japanise version where you get an actual ride? Has anyone been to Japan and able to compare?

It is realyl a shame that the attraction is so short, they could have done much more excting attraction with Captain Nemo. I guess they just ran out of money with this one.

When I went I could not see the squid until it attacked, so it was really great. I feel that people expect too much from this, its only meant to be a A/B ticket walkthrough, and these little walkthroughs that are all over DLP are what make it special and the most detailed park of the Magic Kingdoms. Nowadays everyone expects every ride/attraction to be E-Ticket!

the squid attack looks cool standing dead on or to the left of the porthole, if you stand to your right you can see the squid the whole time.

personally i dont care for the squid attack but i love the nautilus, the art direction on the film was amazing and has been carried though to the ride well.

The attraction had exactly the same problem on my last visit, but rest assured it's not supposed to do that. The attack scene was originally about twice as long, with just a tentacle visible at first, some shoals of fish, and a slightly snazzier electrocution scene. They scaled it back over the years, due to technical problems. (The tentacle was extremely tricky to keep working, so I'm told.) Even with these ommissions, the squid isn't supposed to be visible when not attacking.

I'm lucky enough to have ridden 20,000 Leagues in Tokyo, and the experience is quite different. You never see more than a small portion of the beast at any one time, as you're at extreme close quarters with it throughout the encounter. (Having said that, there's a really nice projection of the whole creature in silhouette as you first approach it.)
The predominant feature is a huge, baleful eye staring at you from amidst the ruins of a sunken city. This is swiftly followed by several large tentacles, which are actually a door, dividing the attack scene from the next section of the show building. I think they're moulded on in relief, rather than painted on, because they're extremely realistic.
Either way, it's a great scene in a great ride, but I wouldn't want to compare it directly to the French walkthrough. They're two different beasts. (Literally!)

Thank you. It's really a shame that I did not get to see it working as supposed. I read from Jimhillmedia about how it used to be, and I find it is a bit of a shame it is not there anymore... altough with French narration I would not understand anyway. Its a fun idea, I hope they enchant it someday rather than remove the attraction entirely.

I find it sad that some people can only appreciate things that have special effects or G-forces. The Nautilus at DLP isn't an E-ticket blockbuster, it's a gorgeous little walkthrough that pays homage to a piece of classic literature.

Though judging by your name and avatar, Kraken, I suppose you're something of a sea monster fan, in which case I can see why you'd have great expectations for a promised animatronic squid.

scorchio is right, what makes or breaks all the disney parks are the little things, (the nautilus, skull rock, boot hill, a key under a matt, dont pull the rope etc) it adds to it, ok its only iceing on the rides, but when they remove or skimp on the iceing (ie the studios) it feels, well, empty and a bit like everywhere else.

I wish this attraction had been open during my trip. I would have loved to have seen it.

It really is a stunningly good attraction. You really do believe you're on board the Nautilus - every last detail of the movie set is recreated. It's the kind of thing the Studios park should be doing.

when it was opened a big thing they made a point about was the fact that they imported the organ from the film, (which i thought was in the haunted mansion in anahiem, so it may have been replaced)
but nowhere says this anymore, pity,
oh hell im gonna end up watching the film this evening at this rate!

This attraction is great, its nice to go in when the park is busy just to get away from the crowds and to get just a little peace from the faster, popular rides. Also when its the winter its what I call a "warm up ride", when you have been walking round in the cold and your fingers are going a bit numb its a good, interesting and fascinating place to go and warm up.

This attraction is just one of the many little gems that this park has dotted around it. I love it.

My expectations weren't insanely high, but as I managed only to see the broken down version of the experience, it was sort of a let down.

So wait these parks have sublagoons? I thought Disneyland was the only MK to have a sub lagoon. Hmm.

no, its only about 3-4 feet deep. its a shell of the nautilus (i think in half scale) you go down a staircase in a tower along a passageway and though an airlock door into the balast room, its all in a showbuilding and dosent move, its just a walkthrough.
