DLP's "Wishes" is back for the summer months/video!!

DLP's "Wishes" premiered again on July 14th (same dat TDS kicked off their 5th anniversary celebration/ see my pics in Tokyo section) and seems to be off to a better start this year. Some of you may recall, when "Wishes" premiered last year...loud Booing could be heard all over the hub as fans' anticipation for thie new show didn't meet their expectations. (and I thought I was bad about bad shows...)
Anyways...I have found video of the entire show posted on www.dlrp.fr and the show looks pretty nice, even if it appears to be a little pyro deficient in some areas. However, the lasers and projections on the castle look pretty neat and these, if they were done at WDW's Cinderella castle, would improve their original "Wishes" a lot. I think it's sad that the MK has lagged behind in this dept, since it appears all other 4 DL parks around the World are capable of doing lasers and/or projected moving images on their castles while WDW's castle only has strobes, color spotlights and stationary/slider light effects devoid of any true digital filmed motion.
Anyways... here is the link to DLP's Wishes, but be patient, as it took a long time to download. Or maybe it would be best to save then play??

es/wishes.mpg

Call your WDW rep and ask them to add these special effects to the MK's "Wishes". God knows they have the budgets for that and could be done much better on their bigger castle.

Dear TDLFAN, I couldn't agree more! I saw the video of this year's Wishes and, even though it's quite nothing compare to other pyro show, it definetely more enjoyable than last year. I was there last year and was thorougly disappointed by the show. There were almost no fireworks. This years the end at least looks a little bit more like and end-of-the-show. I think last year unsuccess was parly caused by wrong expectations: I don't know if the show was presented as a fireworks show but that is what people expected. Now Wishes is call a "son & lumière" show (lights ad sound show) so the attention has shifted more on the light and sound part of the show.

Re: DLP's "Wishes" is back for the summer months/video!!

Well, it's certainly better than what they managed to come up with for Bastille Day, which was like one of those interrupted pees that never seem to end completely. The music had even less to do with the fireworks than it did with the holiday and everyone had already started to leave when the half-hearted finale suddenly came out of nowhere. I think the few thousand people who came in to see it would've been much better off near the Eiffel Tower that night. At least they would've been able to get home afterwards...

And the Wishes that was booed last year isn't quite the same Wishes as the one they have today. Upon being so poorly received, they quickly added quite a few fireworks to fill in the gaps. It was nothing short of embarrassing at first, now it really is pretty amusing and, at the risk of using the ultimate Disney blurb cliche, rather enchanting.

They did a pretty good job with what they had to work with. It does still feel a bit low on pyro, but those fountain-style fireworks only come in so many variations I suppose.

Re: DLP's "Wishes" is back for the summer months/video!!

Interesting comments from you pussnboots. I did see the video from the Bastille day Fireworks and it was simply HORRENDOUS for a Disney show related to a local holiday celebration. You take the MK's 4th of july fireworks over the MK and compare to this and the difference is simply embarrasing to say the least. That music for that show was awful and didn't make much sense. The pyro shells were nice but quite infrequent. It felt at times as if the show had run into technical problems and did not run well.. While it was nice to see high altitude pyro being shot from behind DLP once again, the show was a terrible disservice to all guests there expecting something unique to celebrate France.

As for the low altitude fireworks... the new HKDL show is just that. All low pyro but I felt that show was very nice, since they added the extra icing with fireballs, filmed projections on the castle, and other light effects. This year's version of DLP's Wishes seem quite nice. I do like the "wishes" name across the castle at the end of the show.

Re: DLP's "Wishes" is back for the summer months/video!!

Compared to the MK's 4th of July fireworks they were hardly fireworks. But the choice of music and slightly unconfident patriotic imagery of the Bastille Day display is understandable, I suppose. I mean, you have to realize that the sort of cookie cutter patriotism you could unalarmingly slip between sentences in America would render you a social pariah in most European countries. In the US patriotism is simply a lot more easily turned into a big show, where it has a profoundly established visual and musical repertory and you need no more than John Ashcroft to sing in front of a big eagle to get half the country waving little flags.
I mean, at WDW the voice-over actually made a reference to "honoring the armed forces". If they'd do anything like that at DLP it would make confused headlines all over Europe. So, hence the inoffensive chansons.

The show value and consistency however... Very bad indeed.

Ah... I just read somewhere they had major technical difficulties and half the fireworks didn't actually launch. My bad. Or still theirs, I suppose.

Bit of a blooper, that whole night.

Boy was the last one lousy! I'm going to have to wait to see this video, though. I do think they should at least get more male and female voices to reach the French transcript if they refuse to just go ahead and use the French voices of the characters in the soundtrack.

Wait, remind me when the DLR castle has had moving projections? As far as I know, it's the same system used at MK except with one of those silly little disco laser beam systems and those are hardly magical.

You'll probably disagree with me on this, TDLFan, but fireworks shows are one of the few things the MK does right. DLR has to practically shut down half a city block for their show, TDL's nighttime show is not really a fireworks show, I don't know what the heck HK does, and DLP's soundtrack is (IMHO) a bilingual disaster.

They can't legally do that on days that are not:
- New Year's Eve
- Bastille Day
- Very very special occasions

Unlike CA, the French don't budge their environmental laws for Disney.

I don't understand. You hate the Blue Fairy's French narration? Isn't it mostly the same as the MK version, just French?

?
Are they really "evironmental laws" or are they just the usual "we moved in next to Disney and are now pissed we did they make too much noise" laws?

No, they ARE environmental laws and disney moved in next to the people not the people moved in next to disney.

There were 5 towns in the immediate area when construction began, the restrictions on firework displays at DLRP have been in place since day one they were just not enforced in the first few months. The residence of the towns were then consulted and the new restrictions were drawn up with the towns people in mind.

I agree with you, too much dialogue. The Blue Fairy seems like she is rushing to get her sentences in.

As for Hong Kong they use they also use mostly low level type but there seems to be more variety in the fireworks . IMO there soundtrack at HKDL works much better. Also for some reason the timing of the Fireworks seems more precise.

the eason they do not have so many fireworks is because of the surrounding villages, they simply are not allowed to have that many.
