Space Mountain: Mission 2 Question

I went to Disneyland Paris for the first time a week ago and was excited to finally be able to ride this version of Space Mountain. After riding, I found myself quote disappointed. Apart from the very rough ride experience, the show elements inside seemed lacking. Despite hearing of all sort of neat lighting and projection effects of comets and such inside, the only projection I was able to see was the supernova on the lift. I could tell the ride went through meteors at some points, but they were lit so poorly that I couldn't make them out well. I've read reviews of the ride on the Space Mountain Homepage that loved all of these new effects that were put into the mountain and I saw nothing. I have to ask, are the show effects inside all broken right now, or did I see the ride in its entirety and was it just bad? On a side note, the Columbiad was recoiling on my first day there and it was no longer on the second and third days so I assume mechanical problems occur often.

Re: Space Mountain: Mission 2 Question

In the olden days, while the props weren't always easy to make out on the ride itself either (it's not exactly "it's a small world" after all), windows along the dark queue and a seperate observatory corridor (whatever it was called) allowed for a great examination of it all.

As for the recoiling effect, that usually works nowadays, since they did the makeover at least. But it seems to be a fragile effect that breaks down a lot, yes.

Re: Space Mountain: Mission 2 Question

DLRP detailed effects are not always kept up very well. Many of them in many attraction tends to be abandonned for a couple years, then put back up after a refurb and left dead as soon as they stop working...

Space Mountain huge gun is suppose to smoke and set back as fired. Those two effects rarely work alltogether. As for the inside, well to be honest, I don't ride it that often since up(down)graded to Mission 2. And the effects being so out of the feel, I don't know them that much.

One thing sure, you definitely missed the Original "Mission". That was the hell of a disney ride.

That is one reason why I never place DLP among my favorite DL parks. Maintenance in this park is simply deplorable. It's like being in the MK all over again, but at least the MK facades are cleaner. As beautiful as DLP is, they simply do not cut it in the maintenance dept. You can tell it was a WDW CM team on opening day 15 yrs ago..

AGREED! The changes to Mission2 were horrible. The original music and show elements made this the best Space Mountain ride out there.. Now? it's just faster and bumpier when compared to the other SP rides in operation.

Re: Space Mountain: Mission 2 Question

Yeah, whenever Disney hypes special effects in their attractions prepare to be disappointed. Maybe the FX weren't working when you went on, but they're a big letdown even when they're working properly. The disco ball stars are quite frankly embarrasing and the projections are... well projections and, as always, lack depth.
The one effect that had promise, the neon vortex, is ruined by the fact that you can see the track as clear as daylight. The smokescreen after the third inversion is kind of impressive, but I really fail to see the point of it. The awesome meteors from the original were ruined by having all their edges smoothed off for projection, so now they look like floating space bubbles.
Some of the special effects even ruin the ride experience. As you drop down into the mountain from the launch, there are some obnoxious flashing lights which illuminate the corrugated metal surroundings, completely destroying everything that has come before to establish a journey into space.

Re: Space Mountain: Mission 2 Question

It ain't about the art, it's about the marketing folks.

Who cares if the ride is good anymore when you can market it as an ALL NEW EXPERIENCE JUST COME TO THE PARK RIGHT NOW AND GIVE US YOUR MONEY!!!

The same thing happened to Anaheim's Space Mountain, but on a smaller scale.

Are you actually saying that the ride is no good anymore in California? That's a minority opinion, and certainly not mine.

A bientot.

It's not your opinion but it's a very valid opinion and I agree with it as well. Disney is no longer about exceeding expectations but furthering the marketing agenda and long term visibility of such brands and movies...which is something the classic Disney movies didn't need as much to withstand the test of time.

Space Mountain in its current form succeeds despite the haphazard attempt to reinvent it for the 50th aniversary. It's still good and I still enjoy experiencing it. A dumb window won't make or break a roller coaster. But it was neat, and Disney was always about the details.

I do think Space isn't the best example though. It was never big on theming as much as Space Mountain Paris was. That's why I said it happened on a much smaller scale in Anaheim.

Re: Space Mountain: Mission 2 Question

I'm kinda nervous about going on it, how many loops and corkscrews does it have? Is it Rock'n Roller coaster just set in space?

It is very similar to RNRC with three inversions but actually a little worse due to the roughness. This attraction used to be the best Disney coaster on the planet, but Mission 2 coupled with the roughness, means it is totally a shadow if it's former self.

Re: Space Mountain: Mission 2 Question

Like davewasbaloo said, there are three inversions. The first is a sidewinder loop, which has quite a rough exit. Second is a corkscrew, the roughest inversion on the ride. Third you go through a horseshoe, or tongue loop, which you probably won't notice unless you know where it is.

But I encourage you to try and go on it. Even though it pales in comparison to its predecessor, it's still a fun ride. Have you been on Rock'n'Rollercoaster? Because it's not really much worse than that.

Mission 2 > Original ride.
I just like the redone version everything from the modified show elements to the awesome soundtrack. Looks like I am in the minority. It does feel a bit bumpy but oh well

Re: Space Mountain: Mission 2 Question

You seriously like the new music better than the old? No offense intended, but have you even been on the original?
