Court of Angels to become another Shop Add-On in NOS

David Koenig reports from his latest article:

[...]the Christmas shop in New Orleans Square plans to take over the adjacent Court of Angels.

“What will happen is a ‘themed’ canopy will be put up over the courtyard, cash registers added, and it will be festooned with Christmas merchandise, as an extension of the tiny Christmas shop that borders it,” reports a cast member. “The plans are pretty similar to has been done with the Pieces of Eight shop and how they extended the location into the Royal Street Courtyard. A treasured, beautiful location will become a whore to the almighty dollar…”

I find it disturbing that one of the precious few quiet corners left in Disneyland Park is being canopied and shamelessly stocked with merch. It would make sense that this is only a temporary change for the holiday season, but on the other hand, while the pirates craze is finally seeing a slowdown, the Royal Street Courtyard is still cluttered with registers and canopies, runining the view of the buildings above.

I really hope this doesn't happen. If it does, there will be words at City Hall. The Courtyard of Angels is one of my most favorite spots in the whole resort.

That is so ironic it hurts.

The message this change is telling me is that nothing at Disneyland should be allowed to exist without some sort of obvious return investment to the company. The quaintness and charm and charicature drawing in the Court of Angels is not on its own enough, and apparently the huge assortment of holiday merchandise available on Main Street and World of Disney and the year-round Xmas shops is not enough either.

So they push, push, push, and we buy, buy, buy. Tis the season.

Slowly the things that make Disneyland unique and more than a theme park are being taken away. Given the current mindset at Disney, it's not surprising. Apparently when Iger mentioned giving the guests quality he was talking quality merchandise.

By the way, David's article also mentions that the method to file compliments/complaints at City Hall has changed:

Over at Disneyland, in mid-July, City Hall began instituting a new method for accepting complaints. “If a guest wants to file a compliment or concern at City Hall, they will not be given a form to fill out by Guest Relations,” related a cast member. “The guests will have to tell the cast member what they want to say, and the cast member will write it down. I guess the City Hall cast members will have to brush up on their dictation skills. If a guest insists on writing a comment themselves, they will be directed to the resort’s Web site and fill out a form under the ‘Contact Us’ tab. Why are we doing this? Don’t know.”

A cast member at City Hall would say only that the change had something to do with the legal department.

No more writing your own compaint - in pen and paper that is.

This is not good. And once profits come in from the Christmas sales you know Disney will determine that place is perfect for another store. Sad.

Another Disneyland Mistake

Unbelievable.

Has Disney stopped to think that lots of their guests like to take pictures in there? What about the family who goes back home to Des Moines and shows freinds their vacation pictures and tells them "this picture was taken at Disneyland."

I guess selling a $15 ornament is more important than selling a potential vacation package.
