Since, in some counties, schools have already started. Will there be a lot of people in the parks? Should I expect the worst and hope for the best?

The crowds have been fine this summer, i would expect moderate to best for you. You can definitely feel the thinning of the already few people they have had this summer.

It'll be even more empty if you wait till the beginning of September, I think, but it should be fine either way.

For the thinnest crowds I would wait until after Labor Day. Most public schools in Orange County start after Labor Day.

Although some private schools are starting up now, including all colleges except for UC Irvine which starts in late September.

So Cal passes just became un-blocked this week, which could cause a surge in attendance.

Tell me about it. All lines are now even longer thanks to SoCal APers. On Monday I saw that Splash Mountain had a 70 minutes wait.
