Well it's a hard thing to really say because I think it can be ok as long as the change is blended well enough like say floating leota.
BUT and this is a big but there have been bad ideas too and they stick around for a while. Those pirates are still and may forever chase food.
The big fear for me is if they do something terrible like replace a beloved pirate to add johnny depp. I would be horrified if suddenly he takes the wench selling job away from the guy who is the best at it.

I say changing rides to make them fresh is not a bad thing. Jungle cruise looks cool, and what if they decide to never fix DCA because it's original the horror.

I can't believe so many people are freaking out over a few new animatronics... It's ridiculous.

If the WHOLE ride suddenly became POTC the Movie, then I would be against the whole thing too. I am not to excited about the Finding Nemo Subs either for this reason. If they made a cameo appearance then it would be ok...

But there are only a few effects being added! Get over it...

Walt's legacy is well documented. He knew that this dream (Disneyland) would live long after his death. He made his desires and feelings about the park (and other things that he created) well known. Not in the form of a manifesto or specific directives, but in the form of thoughts and ideas. One of the very things he spoke of on OPENING DAY was that Disneyland was a living, breathing entity. It would forever grow, change and live. It wasn't to stay static.

So from that perspective, we (as a populace) know much about Walt. He was the spark that created the ideal we all know and love. To speak of what interpretations of what Walt would want are valid and positive. To deny that is absurd and makes one look like a fool.

Really? Nobody objected to the upgrades? That's not how I remember things. It seems to me that there was a lot of worrying going on, and a lot of "why are they doing this? This is a classic!" Let's travel back in time to a thread called Haunted Mansion 50th Changes, shall we?

The following are all posts from before the new enhancements had been made:

Mickeybug1 said "No, I think they should leave HM alone. It's great the way it is. I'm all for keeping Walt's vision so I don't necessarily agree when they decide to revamp classic attractions. I know that HM may need it but still... there's already too much going on at DLR."

MasterGracey said "I really dislike the idea of changing the changing portraits. Also, why would we get Master Gracey? Doesnt the Master Gracey portrait play some sort of role at WDW, establishing the ghost host character??
I'm iffy about the Madame Leota effect. Making Leota float in the past didnt work as it wasn't convincing... How will they make the effect work this time? Will she still be projected onto the head still, or will it be a floating animatronic head somehow?? How will that work?
I guess I just love the current state of the mansion so much that I don't want anything to be ruined by drastically changing any effects or features... haha."

You yourself said: "(I happen to think losing the "calendar" portait sucks, that Master Gracey is about as lame a replacement as we can get, and that -after the rocking table fiasco in the seance room- I have a great deal of skepticism about a floating Leota head effect. The new carpet sounds good though.)"

    Nobody complained, huh? (raises eyebrows)
I'm just trying to point out that there is a strong resistance to change here. The same thing happened when the Castle overlay was announced. I remember countless posts about how it was going to look like "Barbie's My Little Pony Dream House" and how ugly and tacky it would be. Now? I've heard very few complaints about the castle, most seem to think a good job was done.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean R.I.P.

First, Walt would only have added a Johnny Depp character to PoC if it was going to make the ride more FUN! Not to just market a movie.

Second, the sequel will do well whether PoC gets an update or not. The sequel attendance will be based on the success of the first movie. But sequels are notorious for POORER quality than the first film. RARELY does a sequel match the quality of the original. (Exceptions are Star Wars and Indiana Jones.)

Third, the PC referbishment was TERRIBLE for the ride! Imagine making pirates less pirate-like. I think the concern for this update is the poor results of the 1997 "blanding" of the ride. If they reverse that, then this will help the ride.

Lastly, I AM FOR PROGRESS if it improves the ride. Better special effects and more AA's are an improvement, even if some look like Johnny Depp. I will not condemn the update until I see the results. This CAN be done well.

    Let's give them a chance...

We know what he did...but we can't know what he will do. He did so many things in his life that no one could predict. Right when everyone thought he would do one thing, he surprised them and did something else. So although we could establish patterns, we can't know what he would have done.

First, Walt would only have added a Johnny Depp character to PoC if it was going to make the ride more FUN! Not to just market a movie.
Then why did he name his castle "Sleeping Beauty Castle" when that movie did not even come out yet? It was to market the movie.

Even Stitch and Everest got ONE AA EACH.
First of all, neither of those attraction were AA-centric attractions. Second of all, Stitch has a total of 5 AAs (one stitch for each room, Sarge, and the two prisoners/skippys). EE we know will have at least 1 AA (yeti) but could very well have many.

I would be so happy to see barbossa in the ride! He is one of my favorite characters! Plus I bet Walt would update the park attraction too because he said he always looked for ways to "plus" things and make them better and more up-to-date. Do you think The Pirates ride would be able to survive throught the years with out any new changes to it? No. That is why updating it now with even newer pirate characters that people can relate to should be put into the ride. To me it would make the ride a whole lot better.

If they make a scary night time sequence successfully, then all the better. I would love to see it.

There is no question that it was a marketing move, but it also made the castle more fun since it was thought that little girls would connect with Sleeping Beauty since the movie would be soon released. To just be the enchanted castle and not be the home to some character would not be very much fun.

I just don't believe that rides promote movie attendance. I believe that a good ride can promote a character's reputation, like Dumbo or Mr. Toad. But rides don't promote movies very well.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean R.I.P.

No one knows for sure if it has the green light, but if Disneyland stops doing new things, then people will stop coming eventually. What did people think of Haunted Mansion Holiday? That became a big success even though many people protested that The Haunted Mansion did not need a big make over. But look at HMH now! It is a big draw. I am pretty sure the new pirates of the caribean updates, if they happen, will be a big draw too.
