Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

Will the high gas prices reduce the attendance at Disneyland/DCA this fall?

I believe that it will because I believe more locals (I define locals as being from California and Arizona) will drive to Disneyland rather than fly. That means that some families will just not be able to afford it.

What do you think?

People who fly might not be affected because they have already purchased their airline tickets. There would not be any increase in cost to them.

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

My dad lives in Arizona and he is meeting us at the park in a few weeks. He was going to drive, since its only 5 hours. Now, he is flying and renting a car. The airfare is pretty cheap, less than 100 bucks roundtrip. Most hotels have shuttles in the area so you wouldn't even have to rent a car.

Basically, I don't think it will hurt- people who want to go will still go. We were also going to drive, but decided to fly instead. Airfare will stay cheap until the Holidays, so I don't see it affecting attendance too terribly.

Jiminy: I believe it will. It even discourages me, and I'm in OC!

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

The flip side is that locals who planned a more distant trip may go to Disneyland instead. I think that WDW may be more effected, especially if airfares start to rise.

I think that WDW has a positive and negative. Distant guests usually book WDW vacations months in advance. If they booked their airline tickets early, then there would be no cost increase. If they drive from Georgia or through that area, then absolutely, WDW would be affected. It sounds like Georgia will have extremely short supplies of gas, probably at high prices through this fall.

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

My wife and I were just talking about this a few days ago. We live in Reno and would always drive. Of course we would make various stops to visit family and friends on the way there or back. When we start making arrangements for our next trip we WILL compare the costs of driving to taking a flight and renting a car in SoCal. The last time we were there our car had les than 20 miles put on it once we made it to the resort and were there 5 days.

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

we plan on going in nov. as long as prices don't exceed $4 per gallon. my wife won't fly, so if want to go we have no other choice than to drive. it only takes me about 1 tank of gas from the bay area to anaheim and back, so thats 22 gallons at say $3 per gallon - only $66 to drive down ( not including food or incidentals - if we stop to eat, etc). iknow that im not factoring wear and tear/oil change etc., but ifigure that is going to happen eventually anyway.
summary - i don't think that it will really stop that many people from making the drive

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

I guess it just depends on how far people live from DLR. There are many variables and the price of gas is just one part of it.

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

It's definitely a consideration, i.e. in my case a round trip from home is 76 miles, at 16 mi/gallon (SUV was NOT my choice!) and 2.95/gallon, that's 14.01 just in transportation, plus meals, etc...but I think the fact is if you wanna go, you FIND a way to go, at least for now!

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

it will discourage middle class and lower class vistors that drive from oregon, idaho, arizona, upper california, etc. It will probably go down alittle but I wouldn't expect a huge drop unless gas prices go up to 4 bucks.

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

That is a really good question. I would think that if gas continues to increase then people will really start to consider travelling less all around. Its going to effect everything and everyone!

Re: Will the high price of gas reduce attendance at DL?

I don't think there is a way to predict if this will affect attendance yet as we will have raises of food prices (due to transportation of them), energy costs and possibly other items due to the devastation of Katrina...only when the dust settles will people be able to see the true effects of the hurricane, and determine how much/how far they want to travel.
