Just checked mattercam, appears the orange stinger has gone dark, and the whole ear (with the exception of the rim) is gone off mickey.

Orange Stinger is still lit up, but You can't tell of any visible progress on the Sun wheel.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker II

It's my understanding that only the ears will be removed from the Mickey Head. The center circle, the head, will be repurposed to look like a sun burst design. It's almost like the Sun and Mickey heads are switiching locations.

I guess this answers the questions of how these changes on Screamin' will happen. Looks like the Mickey Head transformation and Paradise Pier logo will happen slowly at night. That way the coaster does not have to close.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker II

I think removing the Mickey from Screamin' is moronic. Why the hell should they take out such a great Mickey image? I love seeing it from a distance, and knowing that you'll be doing a loop inside of Mickey...this might sound silly, but it makes the ride much more special for me. This isn't plussing...this is minusing.

I always thought the mickey head there was a cool integration of visuals. It's an effect only appreciated at a distance tho. Maybe its considered too modern looking.. dunno. Guess will have to see what the final result is, but right now I have mixed feelings.

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker II

I think the biggest problem of the Mickey head on Screamin is it's modern look. They are attempting to make the entire park into a turn of the century look and I don't know if it would fit that image. Pluse there would be a Mickey head on the wheel and on screamin' if it were to remain, which would be Mickey overkill within such a short distance from each other. They have no choice and I think the overall look of the Pier, once completed will definitely be a plus

Re: Disney's California Adventure Project Tracker II

I too love the Screamin' Mickey... but it is a very modern, brushed Aluminum look... so it REALLY doesn't fit a Victorian era woodie and pier.

But isn't a loop a modern twist to a roller coaster? Since California Screamin' is staying I think the loop should be removed. It throws the areas theme off since I don't know of many victorian-styled boardwalks that had coasters with loops in them. :shrugs: I could be wrong, though.

A simple google search turned up the following information.

The Victorian era ran from about 1837 to 1901 (the reign of Queen Victoria). During this time there were several looping roller coasters. The first of which is probably the Centrifuge Railway built by the French in 1850. In the late 1800's there was the Flip Flap Railway at Sea Lion park. The next attempt wasn't until 1901 Loop-the-Loop opened at Coney Island. This was the last looping roller coaster to be built until 1976 when Revolution opened at Magic Mountain.

The main problem with early loop designs was they were circular instead of teardrop shaped. This circular shape required that the cars have a high velocity to get through it and many necks were broken. The teardrop shape allows for much slower velocity as well as much lower g-forces.

^ You beat me too it. *shakes fist*

If you want to get real technical they did have loops back in the 1900's, they just weren't as safe as the ones we have now.

Wow, ask and ye shall receive! Thanks for the information, you two! It never ceases to amaze me at how informative everybody is on MiceChat! Well, now that I have this information I will retract what I typed earlier about removing the loop.
