Should DL invite Google Maps' Streetview inside?

I recently revisited DisneyFans.com: Virtual tour of Disneyland. where there's a photo tour of Main Street from the late 1990s. One thing I noticed is that monitor resolutions have increased a lot in the past eight years. What used to take up about a third of my screen is now a postage stamp sized picture.

But this tour back to the future popped an idiotic idea into my fetid little feverish mind; what if Disney invited the Google Maps people to wheel their omnivision camera/GPS technology through the streets inside Disneyland?

Not only could you wander along Disney Drive on maps.google.com, but you could also take a quick jaunt down Main Street to remind yourself where the Crystall Palace was in relation to the Carnation Cafe`.

... penny for your thoughts, guvna?

    Disney FAQ#275: What is DCA?
DCA stands for Disney Construction Area. All the Cast Members are themed with hard hats and steel toed boots.

    I'd definitely support that.

Interesting idea. I'd like if if they could do it before opening, when there is no one in the park.

I'd like it if backstage areas were also included. But that's just me.

I've never been that thrilled with the idea of using Google's streetview for Disneyland. I think those of us as MiceChat, with all the photos we could take, could create a much better, immersive and complete version.

The disneyfans site is a good idea, but they need to update the photos and the user interface, make it park-wide and allow people to upload their own photos.

I think that would be pretty cool. I always miss the park and could use it to help plan things for the future.. or even my brother in Iraq can go on it and look around and remember his other home.

Disney itself should consider doing such a tour -- imagine being able to click on facades and learn about the shops inside (and order merchandise), or see attraction videos. Basically, a QuickTime VR-style version of the Disney park map interface already on their websites. Of course, if they don't want to do it, maybe they could outsource to Google as a cross-promotion ;-)

Now, speaking of that old tour, done originally in 1996 I think when I first got my Epson PhotoPC digital camera, I did work on an updated version a few years ago using VR style photos like Google Streetview uses. I replicated the same basic photos all over the entrance and Main Street, with plans to link them in to a new tour where you could pan around 360 degrees and click on hot spots to move to the next image -- all from within a browser.

But, this project has yet to be done (along with tons of 3-D videos I have yet to post, and HD stuff, etc.) mostly because I really didn't think anyone was interested. It seems Google Streetview is bringing new interest to these types of tours, so perhaps I can update that tour using the VR photos sometime over the winter.

Now, someone find some Google Disneyland fans and see what they can work out ;-)

Incidentally, with GPS tagged photos, Panoramio practically can do this now. They hot link photos together to let you virtually tour the area. You can jump from photo of an area, for instance, seeing it in all different directions. It's not smooth or elegant (due to the nature of the photos) and not nearly as easy to tour as Streetview would be, but it might be a good experiment.

Here's an example. Years ago, I would make 360 panoramas by taking pics in all different directions, then stitching them together with software into a QuickTime VR .mov file. I took pics from a hilltop, like this one:

    Panoramio - Photo of [Untitled]

Now, if you go there, you will see a link that says "Look around." Click that and you go in to the Panoramio mode where they linked all my photos together. It's not elegant like a true VR presentation, but it's done with individual photos.

All it would take is someone uploading a boatload of area photos (GPS tagged) and letting them create the links.

Last year, I took several thousand GPS tagged photos at the Disneyland parks and the parks in Florida, so I'll try to find time to upload a batch of them and see what happens.

Pay someone to walk around Disneyland with a camera on their hat.

Charge people to watch the live feed on a web site.

    You've got a business.
