About the July 17, 1955 model map of Disneyland

Hi,

I had a question I wanted to ask at the "Disneyland: The First 50 Magical Years". But no one was really around for me to ask it at the time.

I was looking at the July 17, 1955 model map of Disneyland and I wondered... Why was Sailing Ship Columbia in the middle of this lake? Sailing Ship Columbia was like in Fantasyland it looks like it was very close to the Flying Dumbos.

On the July 17, 1955 model map. Mark Twain is still where it is, to this day at "Rivers of America" .

But Sailing Ship Columbia is somewhere else and not showing in the "Rivers of America" in the July 17, 1955 model map.

Also, Sailing Ship Columbia looks more dressed like the Jolly Roger from Fantasmic, in July 17, 1955 model map too.

Can some MiceChatter please tell me, Sailing Ship Columbia's history on that?

The Columbia did not exist in 1955. What you are seeing was the Chicken of the Sea pirate ship and restaurant. Skull rock was added later. The Columbia debuted on 6-14-58.

When I was a child I loved that pirate ship. i was so sad when it was gone.

I know they were going to keep it when FL was redone in 1983, but apparently it had decayed too much. They do have a nice one at DLP without the tuna.

Also, part of the Fantasyland Pirate ship is now inside Peter Pan's Flight. It was too have moved over near the Small World Mall near Storybookland during the 83 redo of FL. But since it was in bad shape so the remaining parts were used in the Pan attraction.

Here's a slide I found from one of my childhood trips. I'm guessing it was taken from the skyway. You can see the eating area on the right. I miss that ship.

Thanks for showing a picture of it, SCUBAbe. Interesting that it doesn't seem to have that pirate flag banner in the back of it, like it's model did.

This pirate flag banner looked exactly like the one they use for the Columbia. When they transform The Columbia as the Jolly Roger in the Fantasmic show. *it's probably the very one*

Darkbeer has a point on that one as far as opening day, no arguments from me. But I think a model of DL from the 18th would look remarkably like a model from the 17th

My Art History instructor was of the belief that history is a fiction. Seeing as how the company is claiming that 11-18-1928 is Mickey's birthday [sic], even though Mickey was in Plane Crazy in May of 1928, he may have a point.

Yeah I've seen videos of that and there were little boats that went around it, that's what it looked like
