Disneyland AP - If bought at Costco/AAA, when do they become effective?

Hello all, I couldn't find exactly what I wanted using the search so here's my question:

If I was to buy an annual passport from Costco or through an AAA discount, when do the passes come effective? Are the effective the day you buy them, or the day you first go to Disneyland with it?

I would think and hope it was the first time you used them to go into the park.

I would assume they become effective upon the first day of use, however, I do not know for sure. I would recommend calling Costco. I'd say to check their links, but everytime I click on a menu option on their site, I'm redirected to the AT&T website. Bizarre.

Our neighbors purchased them from Costco.

The clock starts ticking when you first use them to enter the Park.

And before anyone asks, yes, they entered the first time on a blockout day.

We did the same with AP certificates we bought through a credit union. It's a paper ticket that you exchange for an AP on your first day of use. There is, however, an expiration date by which you must activate them.
