    Madame Leota Effect.......In a Shoebox...

About two years ago, I created a makeshift Madame Leota effect, using the simple technique that consists of a piece of glass and a TV screen. It worked pretty well for the time...

I wanted to go a step further and detail and scenic the whole scene, the only problem was was there simply wasn't space to store and it would be too big and bulky. So the prototype sat on the shelf for a few years.

Every once and while, I would look at my makeshift effect sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I would wonder "how can I do the same thing, only smaller?". There simply weren't and TV monitors that were small and cost efficient. And LCD projectors are out of the question on this project.

Then I the answer came to me while I was listening to my iPod. BINGO! I'll use the iPod screen since it can play videos! Perfect! Since the small screen offered a higher resolution than my previous effect, the picture would be sharper. So work began on the little scene, in a small box, about the size of a shoe box. I detailed the scene and rigged it with LED lights, added speakers in the back. Then I snapped the iPod into the plastic holder it came with, looped the video....

    Looks pretty good!

Here is a video of the effect in operation. In the second half you will to see the scene with the lid off and how it works. It's a simple, yet convincing effect!

LOVE that you did it with a Pepper's Ghost.

I'm actually working on a peppers ghost mock up myself with a cardboard box.

Your modeling skills are great. You've done a really good job recreating the seance scene. Thanks for sharing that!

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

Great work! The effect is awesome! How did you get a video of Leota, though?

I got it off a site that shows how to do the effect. (I'd give you a link, but the mods around here would be quick to take it down) I took the video and redid the audio, since the quality of it wasn't that good.

Well, of course, I didn't go THAT far!

    Can I borrow your projector? Is it 1" X 1" X 1"?

I don't want to think about that! Just getting the glass at the right angle was enough, let alone getting the glass and the ball to move and track perfectly with each other!

Re: Madame Leota Effect.......In a Shoebox...

The easiest would be to mount the ball and the ipod on a vertical track so they could move freely up and down without any horizontal movement.

2 cables attached to the top and linked to the same winch would lift and lower them at the same rate. This way you would get vertical float and not have to worry about altering the glass orientation.

The same would apply to left right movement of Leota. If she moves right (as seen from front, iPod moves towards front (hole side) of box. If she moves left, iPod moves deeper into box at same rate.

Awesome! My question is how did you get that reel to play on your iPod? If you've hacked your iPod, I might have a few more questions for you... like can you share?

    A little bit about me...
    First Disneyland Trip: Oct. 1989
    Mandatory first ride: POTC
Mandatory food: Clam chowder in bread bowl & a churro (not at the same time though)
    Next trip goals:
    1) Ride the Casey Jr. Circus Train. I didn't get around to it on this past trip.
    2) Get over to TSI.
    3) Try a jalapeño/cheese pretzel. Yummy!
