Night Shots Galore, featuring Holiday Fireworks, +MORE

It's been a while since I put some of my photos in a thread of my own, instead of letting other MiceChat columnists steal them.

The occasion is my big Christmas present: the Canon Powershot S3 IS.

It's a model 2006 camera, and it's since been outdated with the S5 IS, but I got mine as a gift in completely unused pristine condition, complete with case. I was giddy and eager to put my first truly "nice" camera through its paces. My previous digital camera was afraid of the dark, so my first test was to take some night photographs.

(It's awful late at time of posting - past 3 am - so I'll post two pictures below and add the rest at a more sane hour. Check back soon!)

You'll notice that some of the esplanade light posts have barricades around them. The "celebrate today" lettering on the banners is not visible (and there are spooky ghost guests) because I overdid the exposure time a little.

Starting with the Golden Gate, I went to DCA first.

Nice present I got a newer camera in October and am lovin' the kind of pictures I'm getting. Looking forward to the rest.

There are several reasons why I love this shot. I like how objects in the foreground and background are evenly lit and focused, and even though the composition of the shot has been done many times, it looks cooler at night. I have no idea who the guy in the Jack Skellington sweater is. Note too that the oversized holiday lights nearest the big ornaments are not lit.

One of the things I've been dying to pull off successfully is capturing ride vehicle movement in a blur with extremely long shutter time. It's a challenge to hold the camera steady to keep the nonmoving elements in the frame from joggling around. This shot makes Francis Ladybug Boogie actually look fun.

Bountiful Valley Farm has some neat geometric features to it, even if the area is kind of boring. I like the pattern the cobblestones and thin grass make to simulate a web for Rosie, the female spider from A Bug's Life.

    MMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

This is as fascinating as yellow irrigation pylons get, my friends. I like the play of light and darkness due to the spotlights on each one.

Meanwhile, Paradise Pier gets a good look at itself in the reflection and contemplates what a full body makeover will look like.

I have a small table tripod, so I broke it out and set up my camera on a trash can and captured the Golden Zephyr in motion. The next few photos have shutter times between 4 and 10 seconds apiece. I think the shapes the lights make are fascinating and beautiful.

This is one of those pictures that makes you wonder if you'll be seeing this one or two years down the road. As you probably know, the Route 66 area of Paradise Pier is heading for the offramp. This sign has lots of glowy neon as well as lights spiraling up the lighthouse.

I could have taken more Electrical Parade pictures, but I was anxious to head over to Disneyland to attempt something I've never attempted before: pyro shots. Curious that the Blue Fairy float is in focus while the floats behind her are not. I like that the surroundings are captured: the Paradise Pier Hotel, Dino Jack, and Mulholland Madness.

    Pyro shots are next!

My favorite place to view Believe..In Holiday Magic is near it's a small world holiday. Unfortunately the area in front of the attraction was roped off, so I went to the end of the old Motor Boat Cruise loading dock instead and got great results.

    Evil smiley!

Disneyland fireworks shows have a large number of "specialty" pyro: the kind that scatter quickly, glitter a lot, or make unique shapes. I think the regular "ball" peonys look best in photographs, and of the pictures I took last night, I think they turned out the best.

The climax of the Russian Dance segment and the finale turned out way too bright, but that's ok; too many fireworks looks messy in the frame anyways. Usually two or three look best. I have fears that New Years Eve fireworks will be just too much to photograph, but I am eager to give it a try anyway.

Not curious at all. This is due to an opened aperture. Presuming that you had your camera on automatic, your camera would have opened the aperture in the lens as much as possible to let in a maximum amount of light. The flip side of having the aperture open is that it cuts down on your depth of field, that is, how much of the photograph is in focus. This is a common trait among shots taken with a wide aperture. If you were zoomed in at all, that would have contributed to the effect as well.

Nice shots, by the way. I'm going to have to bring my tripod to the park sometime - I've always wanted to capture nights shots!

To conclude, some shots around Disneyland Park.

This one is probably my favorite.

Like it or despise it, there's no ignoring a huge lit kinetic structure.

Sparkling with joy, and thousands of light emitting diodes.

I didn't like how most of my carousel shots came out. There are about five seconds in between the last guests exiting and the next guests boarding the horses. I'll try again on an offseason night.

A splash of teacup color concludes my experimentation with night shots. Thanks for viewing!
