Fridays at the DLR: A look back at September - December 08

Updated 1/7/09: Link for Part II - October is below

Although I've been shooting more in the park this year, I've not done as many updates recently as both Darkbeer and Master Gracey have been doing such an outstanding job each week with their columns. So rather than take shots for updates this year, I've been trying to gain experience as a photographer as I've been told that one of the best ways to improve is to get out and shoot as much as possible.

And rather than pepper you with my shots every week, I thought I would wait and post a compilation at the end of what I will call a "semester." It's probably going to be in seven or eight parts and I would love it if you wanted to check back during the next couple of weeks for more installments as it will take me a while to upload these shots. Some of my favorite shots will be towards the end. And...why Fridays? I'm usually off on Fridays and my kids are in school, so I usually have a couple of hours to shoot without my kids complaining about having to stand around waiting for me.

Before I begin, I just wanted to thank the amazing photgraphers as well as the administrators and Mods of Micechat as they are primarily responsible for by interest in digital photography. Before coming to Micechat, I did not own a digital camera and had never posted a photo online before. But after looking at the countless amazing shots that I had seen here on Micechat, I knew I wanted to get out there and try a few myself. At the beginning, I wasn't sure where to start. I didn't know what an avatar was, and I had to ask my students how to use photobucket. I also had to borrow a Nikon D50 from school to experiment with my first trip report. Now, two and a half years and some 30,000 images later, I am hooked and have gone on to invest in a handfull of lenses and have just received a Nikon D90 from Santa for Christmas.

So on we go with a look back at the Fall semester. I'll be posting most of these for the first time, but you might have seen two or three of these before in other threads during the past four months. I'll also be posting links to the other parts in this intial post just in case you want to come back later and check them out. :

To begin, I thought I would start with an overall sample of shots before going back to September and posting them month by month through December.

    Cool photos! Thanks for sharing.
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

Amazing shots (as always)! With photos like yours, its hard to believe you're a rookie! .

Like yo,u MiceChat is what got me interested in photography. And it doesnt hurt that the park is so incredibly photogenic.

Anyway, I snagged the shot of the Mickey balloons in Fantasyland and it's now my iPhone wallpaper. It's perfect!

Great shots! And I think you should still do photo updates -- no need to stop on account of me and Darkbeer! To use a clich -- the more the merrier!

Oh, wow. I was so happy to see this thread. I've missed your updates. These shots so far are, as always, amazing.

I too have started getting into taking more pictures because of MiceChat and its amazing photogs like the ones you mentioned and yourself

I can hardly wait for my AP block to be lifted so I can once again go and continue to experiment with my new camera.

    Looking forward to September!

Brilliant photos, and I love the update concept....the more people enthusiastic about park photography here the better, I know I've vastly expanded the amount and type of shots I take now at the park, and the things I try out to get photos and be on the lookout for subjects....and the great photographers here on micechat have certainly inspired me to do so, even if my work isn't on the same level or I don't have the most up-to-date camera (Nikon digital 8700 with 71.2 mm zoom lens). Keep them coming MD!

Mac Daddy, this is an amazing sampling of photos!!! The statue from outside Haunted Mansion is stunningly beautiful and I just love, love, love the photo of BTMRR framed by the colorful leaves.

I cannot wait for the rest of the semester! Bring it on.

    Part I: July/September

Last Summer, I saved up enough to buy a Sigma 10-20 wide angle lens, which quickly became my favorite. So, not surprisingly, most of the shots in this section will be with this lens. You may recognize a few of these from an earlier thread, but I've tried not to repeat too many of them as I shot like a maniac during September and there are quite a few others that I wanted to share.

One of the things I love about the wide angle is that it makes a pseudo empty park look REALLY empty...

I also love the distortion created by this lens out on the edges...

Wow... thats all I can say is just... wow. Do you know how jealous I am of what beautiful pictures you take?? Well, that and the fact that you are 12 minutes away from the park....
