Theme parks to entertain kids as much as adults were tried in Las Vegas about 15 years ago: MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park - they didn't work.

Note: Wikipedia is not the end-all authority, but it's a good place to start your research.

If done very carefully, with an understanding of the unique place that Vegas is... then yes, it could work. It would be difficult, but it is possible I think.

Re: Disney and Las Vegas Would it work?

Vegas pretty much gave up on trying to entertain children, so should we...

Some of the remnants of that failed experiment are still there, but I bet they wouldn't go back there if they had a second chance.

That imaginary 5 billion bucks would be better spent taking care of the properties that Disney already owns (including the imaginary third gate on Harbor).

Re: Disney and Las Vegas Would it work?

Beat me to it... Vegas tried "family friendly" and discovered 1 of 2 things happen. Either the family sticks together and the House looses patrons of the Casino... or the family splits apart and the decision is made when the family gets home that Vegas wasn't a good "family vacation" since everyone split up so next vacation they go somewhere else. Adults are the bread and butter of Vegas... not kids...

Well it seems their next plan is just to lower the gambling age altogether.

But yeah, people would have to split up, and only the underage kids would split to go to a theme park by themselves, which likely wouldn't be a good plan. Sure, a large majority of people split up at the DLR, but thats only in an age group of 12ish and up. It would just be a mess.

Disney and Vegas, together? I dunno..

I don't think I want to see Mickey handing out escort service or prostitution leaflet ads on Main Street USA to guests.

Disney and Vegas do coincide occasionally. Want proof?

My wedding. So there.

But back on topic...let's keep that proposed money in California and enhance what we've got here.

No. Vegas exists for very, very different purposes than Disney parks do. And they need to focus on developing the parks they've got right now, anyway, not spreading themselves even thinner, especially within the States.

Re: Disney and Las Vegas Would it work?

It's important to note that the OP was a hypothetical, not a suggestion that it be done. It is a question of CAN it be done. Is it possible. And I think that letting WDI tackle this one as they ARE capable of, it is completely possible to come up with a solution that works.

Why couldn't a Disney hotel work in Vegas? Gambling and Disney don't go together so I doubt there'd be a casino, but there are a lot of people who travel to Vegas for the climate and the many other things to do in the area. Vegas is near one of the great outdoor locations (Lake Meade) and many other outdoor locations.

Vegas consists of a LOT more than just the strip, though admittedly, that is probably what the OP is referring to, but not necessarily.

Disney could absolutely work with Vegas.

Yes, they have tried the family friendly approach in years past, and it didn't work so well. Then they went to a "what happens in Vegas..." approach, and they lost all the families, so that didn't work either. They have tried the extremes. Lately (in the past 2 years or so), they have started cleaning the strip of material questionable for minors and limiting areas where such material can be distributed. I think they have realized that they can't alienate either crowd, families or partyers, but that they have to play to a more middle ground.

This is where Disney CAN work with things. There are hotels that are obviously geared more towards families and those that are more for the hard core party crowd. There is an opportunity to create a niche market in Vegas should someone want it bad enough.

Vegas is the land of "themes", and who does theme better than our very own Imagineers? They practically invented it. Vegas is a land of dreams, where ANYTHING can happen, just around the next corner. Sound familiar? Like maybe any one of a dozen Disney promotional videos?

Despite their obvious diferences, Disney and Vegas have some very basic, foundational sort of things in common.

Now, I'm not saying it is a good idea, or something they should do... merely that it is something that they most definitely COULD do and do very well.

Re: Disney and Las Vegas Would it work?

As someone who lives in Vegas and used to work for Disney... As much as I would love it there are more reasons why I would hate it... Mainly because when I am sitting down to my favorite slot machine I don't want to hear kids screaming or running up and down the isles... I get enough of it already... People please leave your kids at home if you decide to come to Vegas... Do all of us adults a favor...

Re: Disney and Las Vegas Would it work?

I can see it now. Being the kids to Disney and Daddy can gamble, get drunk and visit the Bunny Ranch at night. Sounds like a match made in hell.
