Shooting victim honored at Disneyland?

Yeah, my dad told me about this. It is totally bizarre. There is no stinking way Disney is going to put that statue inside their park.

No offense, but why is his case any different than the hundreds of others that take place in hundreds of cities around the world?

I don't want to sound racist (as I'm really not -- I'm actually extremely tolerant to all races and religions), but should it even matter that he's black? Why should he get any more respect than let's say an Asian who was killed in the same circumstances?

Plus, Disney had absolutely nothing to do with this unfortunate event. They don't - and should not - need to honor the request whatsoever. Not to mention it doesn't even fit in with the theme of Main Street.

I do agree with you there.

But even if it was racially motivated, I still don't get how it involves Disneyland.

The only recent event I can recall where Disney could have placed a memorial within their park would have been for the Torres family (the family who's son was killed in the BTM accident in 2003). Now that would have been an understandable request. (I don't even think they requested a memorial, anyways.)

I think its justifiable to be upset over what was obviously an un-just incident. However' Disneyland is not the appropriate place to express this.

I seems the family is trying to garner sympathy but it's getting the exact opposite from me for this crazy request. As cruel as this sounds the only monument he should get is his tombstone. Anaheim's probably going to settle out of court for a ton of money, they'll be able to afford a monument.

Oh no, I totally agree that they should be upset over what happened, and really the last thing I (or most likely anyone else) want to see at Disneyland is a monument to someone who got shot anywhere.

The article says 'The statue would "serve as a message of healing and reconciliation to the community and a reminder that deadly force should be eliminated from the streets of Anaheim,"'. Yeah, that is what I want to see plopped down right in the middle of Town Square on Main Street. Can you imagine what tourists from other countries would think walking up and reading something like that IN the park!?

I completely understand how upset someone can be by losing a loved one, especially their child. However, I don't think anyone deserves any sort of memorial inside the park just for the specific reason that it doesn't fit. Disney did not mean to cause the BTMRR accident or any other; there is no place to put any sort of memorial without a depressing feeling (statue on Main Street) or mockery (statue in Haunted Mansion).

So my condolences to the family; however, try to use a better attention ploy.

I think the issue is more about ---in what way does, or should, Disney acknowledge community issues. Because Disneyland is so synonymous with the City of Anaheim, people expect the Park to respond to anything and everything that occurs within the City limits.

What's interesting is that, had this occurred in Orlando, Florida----Nobody would ever think to lay the same obligations on Disney World because nobody thinks of Orlando and Disneyworld as one-in-the-same.
