French Market switches from Silverware to Plastic Utensils

It was a nice touch in separating the French Market from fast food type locations in the park. Guess its another cut back.

BTW, the dogs finally back once and for all in POTC if it hasn't been mentioned. Nice collar.

This is declining by degrees big time. This is a real shame.

I know tons of you are going to think its not a big deal and you are entitled to your opinion. But to me this really is a display of Disney's disregard for quality.

Re: French Market switches from Silverware to Plastic Utensils

I've never understood the switch to plasticware as a cost cutting measure. Is the labor, water, electricity, plant and shrinkage used washing dishes more costly than selling and disposing of plastic ones? Either way the cost is passed onto the guest.

Also from a quality point of view, proper china and silverware (or at least reasonable facsimiles of such) are a better experience for the guests.

Plastic knives and forks don't cut and stab as well. As I experienced today from a chinese food establishment in a food court (I'd prefer chopsticks but it was in a bogan* mall so knives and forks are handed out).

( *"Bogan": Australian rough equivelent to US Rednecks ... but not really. Let's just say that the majority of them wouldn't know what to do with two sticks... )

Can't say I'm surprised, but how tacky must it be to eat food on china with plastic utensils! From an aesthetic point of view, that's pretty tacky.

Since Disney has made these dining changes I choose to eat mostly outside of the park now

That is such a shame. What about Rancho de Zocalo? I had forgotten that the DL counter service used real crockery and utensils on our Feb trip and was pleasantly surprised. WDW and DLP only use cardboard.

Between this and the cut in live entertainment, DL may drop off of my top spot soon. That would be a real shame.

unless something has changed, the main kitchen facility in NOS is going to be remodeled. probably affecting the cleaning machines. since French Market is a high volume eatery... transportation of silverware thru the park would not be effective. if this is the case then i can see why plastic is now being used (i would rather have plastic than have to wait for a clean silverware delivery).

Hopefully this means that it is only temporary. Somehow I doubt it but one can always dream.

So you're saying it could be temporary? I mean, I can't see how using disposable flatware would be a good thing long term, you know - and these days, it doesn't seem very 'green', when you could just wash the dishes/flatware.

Re: French Market switches from Silverware to Plastic Utensils

The prices were recently raised by quite a bit, they take away refills on the beverages and now they give us plastic utensils? AT what point to guests realize they are getting screwed? All of these recent changes are making it rather obvious.

I took a lot of flack for calling a spade a spade and questioning the motives behind the price hike. Personally I see it as greed, plain and simple... but others felt there was significant justification for the price hikes. In light of that fact I would like to hear any defense if plastic ware becomes a long term solution. If plastic ware is saving the company money, then I also welcome an explanation as to why it is not passed on to a consumer who is paying 30% more then they did prior to a refurbishment.

"Obvious" to MiceChatters.

To the avg "guest", they probably don't even notice.

They are at the Park to have a good time, not worry about plastic utensils.

Or themed trash cans.

Or CM's with sunglasses.

Or a few paint scuffs on the fire hydrants.

Etc...Etc...

As far as screwing the guests goes, if they leave happy, how did they get screwed?

A hypothetical example of a customer getting "screwed":

Customer A goes to Nordstroms to buy a pair of Ugg boots. He pays $159.

Customer B goes into Sport Mart and buys the EXACT same pair of Ugg's but only pays $119.

Both leave their respective stores happy.

Did Customer A get screwed???

Customer's of Sport Mart might think so.

Customer's of Nordstroms wouldn't.

Same difference.

MiceChatter's look at the Parks in a different way than the avg "tourist" does.

Doesn't make it right...Doesn't make it wrong.

But certainly, MiceChatters don't speak for all tourists...

And thank God for that! I never realized how "bad" the Park was until I started reading the posts here about two weeks after MC went online!

I was ready to cut up my Club 33 membership card!

NOT!!!

I hope it's only a temporary situation mainly from a "green" perspective. I hate to see them take any steps away from ones that were already good for the environment.
