It was a Close Call on Space Mountain tonight

I don't know if anyone on here witnessed this, but around 8:50 p.m. this evening (Friday) inside the loading station for Space Mountain a cast member accidentally fell on to the track while an oncoming vehicle nearly struck him, stopping just 2 feet in front of him.

It was a scary thing to witness, I just about saw the whole thing happen. It appeared as if he either held on to a dispatched vehicle and he lost his balance and literally fell on to his back on the center part of the track. I don't think he got caught on anything because there is nothing on the back that looked as it could have pulled him down.

A lot of people saw it happen, and a few people actually screamed thinking that he was going to be crushed by the next car. I praise Disneyland's superb emergency system that went off in an instant, all the lights turned on and the vehicles stopped on a dime. He was 2 seconds away from what could have been a fatal accident.

The cast member is okay though, he got up and it looked like his back was hurting from the fall. The entire ride was evacuated, and they handed out several readmission passes. Shortly after 10 pm Space Mountain re-opened, and i was glad to see the cast member at the entrance taking fast passes and he was quite chipper.

I'm glad he was alright and is very lucky. A few years ago a similar incident happened at Six Flags Magic Mountain on Revolution, but that actually ended in the death of an employee. I believe he or she crossed the track when an oncoming train hit her.

Just glad to see everything turned out okay.

That would be frightening. Glad it had a good ending. I hope his back is fine too and kudos to Disney for having a fine emergeny system.

So glad that the CM is ok and was able to return to working... I couldn't imagine witnessing something like that even if the CM wasn't hurt! What a heart stopping moment...

I am so glad the CM is fine!!

Times are changing! Emergency systems have officially been proven to work effectively at Disney. This is such a huge, and awesome thing for guests to know and feel safe on a ride.

I'm glad he was not hurt. I would not have liked to witness that sort of thing though.

You know....for all of the complaining that we do about SM going down three times a day due to cascading and what not, this is what that system is designed to do. Glad they could hit a button and save that guy's life. Kudos to Disney imagineers and the CMs who were on deck.
