Birthday question

I'm curious... how do the Cast Members know when it's your birthday? I hear them tell people happy birthday using their first name but how do they do it? My boyfriend thinks they have a button of some sort that prompts this to happen, but I don't know. I went in for my birthday yesterday and when I was admitted into the park the lady checking tickets told me happy birthday, but that was it for the rest of the day. I didn't get any such button if that's the way it's supposed to work.

DL gives out Birthday Buttons.

In your case, I'm assuming that your ticket said something that designates it a free birthday admission.

CBF is right, normally it's the buttons. Before the Free Birthday Admission deal if you had an annual pass it would make a different sound when the CM scanned it on your birthday.

When I went for my B-day last year I went to City Hall to get a birthday button and I had some of the CM's saying "Happy Birthday Princess Jennifer" It was funny. I had my boyfriend start saying that too...Lol!!!

It sounds like you didn't ask for your birthday button or, for whatever reason, the CM selling you your ticket (did you buy at the parks' ticket booths?) didn't pony up. CMs can see the birthday button a mile away and can usually read the guest's first name printed on it. Voila! There you have the personalized birthday greeting.

when they scanned my ap, it said happy birthday in bold on the screen.

There's actually a monitor on the ticket booths and as a AP is scanned, your photo comes up on the monitor. If it's your birthday, a large 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' is displayed as well as your pic to prompt the CM with the greeting.

Gotta love the fact that they do stuff like that =) It really makes you feel so special, even though there are tons of people a day hearing it. but its still pretty cool that they at least acknowledge it. And even random people around the park (guests not CM's) have told me as well

I love my birthday buttons. I don't have any from Disneyland, but I have a small collection of the various ones they gave out at WDW before they went to the general one they give out at all the parks now.

I have an annual pass. I did go get my Fun Card at the ticket booth before going through the entrance... wasn't told anything about a button either time. A lot of people must've had them though because I heard the greetings several times.

Oh well, it was a great time anyway.

Any guest can go to City Hall and ask for a B-Day button. They'll put your name on it and while you are wearing it at the Resort, both CM's and guests might wish you a happy b-day!

Be sure and ask them for your special B-Day phone call too!

You can also get the buttons at the DLH and the hotel restaurants like Goofy's Kitchen.

City Hall also has buttons for other occassions such as anniversary's, first trip, guest of honor, etc...

It's a nice Disney touch...

I wore my birthday button all day but I have to say I got more "happy birthday" 's from random people just walking by then by cm's.

We encourage our kids (and ourselves too) to wish folks a birthday greeting while we are enjoying the Resort.

It makes us feel good too!

Here's a nice story. My boys had turned 5 and had their bday buttons on proudly. We were in line for the Carousel and Mary Poppins and Bert were on the ride. As they were going around, Bert noticed the boys standing in line and leaned over to Mary to say something. When they came back around, they both said "Happy Birthday Boys!" and waved to my kids.

My boys were SOO excited that Mary Poppins knew it was their birthday and acknowledged it. Just a part of that Disney magic that keeps me coming back over and over again.
