Armchair Imagineering - Maliboomer refurb

Ok, with the talk of the Parachute drop floating around the message boards, and the realistic fact that it will be a real pain to even take out the towers, what would happen if they pushed both the ride, and the idea of a parachute drop together?
I know, this would be yet another attraction themed to a Pixar character/movie, however, it could really work. Retheme the queue to a boot camp, complete with sandbags, and barbed wire. The towers themselves can get a new canvas, with a toy airplane towards the top, with green army men falling towards the ground with their parachutes. The ride will have to be reprogrammed to have the carriages rise slowly, and then fall, instead of a launch. Onboard audio will accompany the carriages, with a short, and breif speil from the commading green army man.
Your thoughts?

Personally, if there is going to be something as tall as MaliBOOMer in Paradise Pier I'd rather have it changed to a simple observation tower that spins around. With a few slight ornamental changes it could easily look victorianesque.

Re: Armchair Imagineering - Maliboomer refurb

They sadly cant do that with the towers since theres something in the contract with S&S regarding the fact they are unable to have 2 similar S&S thrill rides within such a close distance.... Knotts Berry Farm beat Disney to that type of S&S Tower as Knotts had them build Supreme Scream which slowly rises and then drops.... and thats why Disney had to go with the design that Blasts you upwards.

But the idea is cool... more Toy Story to the pier and thats never a bad thing... they could do something similar and just use the same launch it already has... just add some different color scheme and banners to it and it will look like a different ride.

Also that change in ride experience would involve replacing the whole tower anyway as far as I know. I'd say the pneumatics would not be interchangable.

The toy story parachute drop ride has been dropped from DCA entirely, and it is going to open in Paris in 2010.

However, I'd say for the Maliboomer, first of all. Get ride of those cheap vinal space ship tarps. Then get ride of the thunder bolt things at the top. The paint the whole thin reddish/maroon and line it with lights. Wham! Instant Victorian tower.

still I have seen the ride vehicles slowly rise to the top of the tower on one trip we went to... though this was long after DCA closed and was about a year ago

I would say they have the capability to slowly rise to the top and since the ride is pretty much powered the same way as supreme scream I wouldnt put it out of the question that it could possibly be done... although its powered through pistons and air pressure like those super soakers most of us used to have as kids... and I am sure they put the pistons in one location for the upwards launching towers and in another dor the downwards launching towers.

They do make combo towers too so maybe the pistons are in a separate location of the tower.... but I saw the ride slowly rise to the top of the tower one night as the hotel we stay at most of the time is on the backside of katella and since the walk includes a walk down disneyland drive by the Paradise Pier hotel you cant help but look at DCA after its closed.

^Cool thanks for setting me straight!

I wasn't entirely sure just basing it on what I knew of the ride's mechanics.

Whatever. Paradise Pier is a lost cause, IMO.

In anycase I would prefer to see it stay as a 'Space Shot' ride experience or go for good as I'm not a big fan of drop rides after the Giant Drop at Dreamworld.

Let's get one thing straight-S&S towers CANNOT switch from one mode to another. The mechanics for the two modes are completely different, and they cannot be switched out without dismantling the towers themselves.

I was watching the mattercam about a week ago and saw one of the cars slowly go up...stop at the top for about a min...then slowly go back down as though they were using the tower to overlook the construction in the bay. Im not crazy cuz either, i was talking to a friend who was also watching and he can account for this too.

That's just running the startup/shutdown maintenance modes.
Its how they check the cable for defects each day.

As for a re-design, those hammer-bell tower games are about the only connection I can think of within the "olde" seaside theme.
Breaking that era, you have a few more possibilities, but I think that defeats the point again.

There's always the completely generic and cop-outa lighthouse theme though =)

If it were solely a drop, you could then say it was a "roll up, roll up! dive off the pier lighthouse to win a prize! Are you man enough?!" type show thing. But its harder to explain the launch...

As much as I love the thrill that ride gives, take it down.

So much more can be done with that space than a carnival ride. It won't even fit in with the Victorian Pier anyways. Paradise Pier is not a lost cause. It has so much potential to be a detailed and immersive land. Just take a look at the Beergarden concepts.

And if they end up going through with the revamped Screamin' area, it could be a very nice land.

Ok, with the Lighthouse idea, what about an attraction themed to Pete's Dragon? The launch could be explained with such that Pete is stuck in the lighthouse, and he needs to find a way out. You could easily build a lighthouse frame around the towers, and add some fire effects that shoot off, and wham bam there ya go, an attraction that not only has a Victorian theme tie in, but also could easily fit with the attraction currently there.
