Department 56 - Though Long Gone, It Could Use A Disney Idea

Let me start it this way........

One of my all time favorite rides at the park, ever since I was a little kid, is Storybookland. I love passing by those little villages and trying to imagine being that small. It even be nice to be one of those people that works on those.

Now I'm going to stray for a moment, go off on a tangent in relation to this ride, then go back on topic. I love this ride, but the only thing I don't like about it are those freakin ducks!!!!! Whether it's at night or during the day, those good for nothing ducks sit in many places next to those buildings, especially in London Park and completely throw off the scale of the ride! Grrr

Ok, now back to regular scheduled programming.

As I said a moment ago, I would love to work on those or be able have one of my own. Now, for those that aren't familiar with the Dept 56 products, they're small houses, smaller than SBL, but villages like New England Village, Dickens Village, The North Pole, Halloween Village, Christmas in the City, and a few others. My idea would be to incorporate these two and make a Storybookland Village based on the ride and the different Disney storybooks. And it would be "giant duck" free!!! Either Dept 56 could come up with this, or perhaps Disney could come up with their own. Anyone like to add their own input or insight into this?

The only person that I'd even trust with that is Robert Olszewski. I'm sure that Disney would rather continue with entire attractions/buildings for now though.

I don't get what you mean by incorporating in different Disney storybooks. That's what it is now.

I agree. Olszewski's work is amazingly detailed.

As for the ducks -- I love them!

He does good work but I can't get past the artistic liberties he takes on some of the buildings.... the Jungle cruise really eeeeeeeeerks me - the whole proportion is completely off

Taking the ones they have now and putting them into small "dept 56" size villages for disney and dept 56 enthusiasts to purchase and own.

Dept 56 as part of Lennox is in Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, if they can't find a buyer they'll be gone in six months.

At one time they made a very cute Storybook Land Village with cute buildings like Cinderella's Dress Shop and Rapunzel's Hair Salon. They pulled it off the market in less than a year, a move that made many Dept 56 customers very angry.

Hence the reason that Disney should buy them out, or be a partner. They could make a fortune in this line of products if they released a Storybookland Village.

I will miss Dept 56, too. It would always be one of my stops in DTD. And I'm sure many of you know that Dept 56 did do some Disney building and characters. They had a Haunted House (which did not look like any of the Parks Haunted Mansions), and they added a new Christmas building or house each year, and even some small figures.

A few years ago, DL had some small light up winter versions of houses and buildings from Toontown - It was a cute set, and had some nice details, although not as intricate as Olzewski's.

I think it's a great idea. I wish the Monorail Train System still had attractions available for it. I would love to have a miniature Disneyland in a back yard.

Oooh you know what would be cool - a Lego Disneyland...that'd be awesome.

edit: and of course it is.

I have a Disney set of 3 Storybook houses- Toad Hall, Geppeto's Workshop, and the Dwarfs' Cottage. The windows light up and are on little wooden bases that actually say "StorybookLand" on a little plaque. I'll see if I have a picture of them... They are marked "Disney Collectibles" on the base and have a logo for the 50th. These came all together in one set; I'm not sure if there were others.

Aiden'sDaddy, you are a genius. I would love 'em.
Certainly if they're as cute as the ones SusieP posted!
Although I'd like them better without the bases. Probably need those though since the windows are lighting up.

P.S. Agree with you on the ducks - Blarghh!

Yeah, the batteries are in the base, so that explains the design.

I'm pretty bummed that Dept. 56 is no more. I always dreamed of having a Disney Christmas village and Disney train set! Now I have no clue where I will obtain these items one at a time for years and years until I have a giant set to pass on to my children....

They should simply send an empty boat through the ride, place a cast member in the seat part of it while another drives. And the one cast member could simply use a little air gun to scare the ducks off. It's harmless and they won't have PETA up their behinds. Or if they redone the ground on all the displays, installing electric sensors that would mildly shock the ducks if they tried to sit on it. Harmless repellent that would keep them off and away from the displays.

If Disney would make their own Dept 56 style villages, and designed them like the others, they wouldn't need bases for battery powered windows. Simply have removeable plug in lights that would go in the back of the buildings.
