no. I don't think that would work too well.

Re: Tomorrowland to turn into discoveryland?

I would say no because I think the attractions that would be based off of the Americans would not be all that great. Like with Jules Verne you can have it based off of 20k and From the Earth to the Moon but trying to base things off of American scientists just would be harder and I don't think it would translate as well. But that's just me.

Re: Tomorrowland to turn into discoveryland?

They attempted to go this route in 1998 and it was a total disaster. While I love the turn-of-the-century machinist aesthetic associated with verne, edison, etc, TL was not built that way. I think to achieve that look successfully, a space needs to start fresh. Our TL belongs firmly rooted in the 50's/60's futuristic modern aesthetic, with clean white and chrome and bright pops of color. They've been making very slow changes back in that direction ever since they realized that the 1998 version wasn't working (albeit with a lot more blue than before), and I just hope they keep making progress in this. To switch back to the old-fashioned look again would totally undo all that progress, and I think it's already been proven unsucessful in our DL once before.

Actually, they should turn it back into Tomorrowland.

I'm going to have to say "No" to that one.

Re: Tomorrowland to turn into discoveryland?

While I do say no initially, I would love for it to happen if it was done right. All they did with the '98 version was use the color schemes of DL Paris and drop in the AO. If it was done right with a large budget and some innovative ideas, I think it'd be amazing. Of course, this would require more than just new attractions with a paint job ... it would require complete architectural renovation. The other downside is that our TL is just too small to make many of the elements work. A lagoon with a walk-through Nautiulus would be great; but that combined with the rock work and other thematic elements needed to make it successful would just cause too much of a cluster in our TL. We've already seen what the rock work does at the plaza; and what Cosmic Waves did.

Re: Tomorrowland to turn into discoveryland?

They tried that in the 90s, and it didn't look as intended. Paris has the benefit of the structures being built for thr design, while California has an almost googie/midcentury look that doesn't quite work.

Re: Tomorrowland to turn into discoveryland?

No. Tomorrowland is what Walt Disney created. Disneyland Paris is not made by Walt Disney so they can do what ever they want for there Tomorrowland for all I care.

Re: Tomorrowland to turn into discoveryland?

^That's a bit of a slippery slope ... using that logic we should not have Bear/Critter Country, Mickey's Toontown, or a host of other attractions/theme parks.

The reason why TL '98 has such a bad taste in most of our minds isn't neccessarily because of the paint job, it was because it was done on the cheap. Like others (and myself, earlier) have said, the Discoveryland concept could be done well in Anaheim, but it would need new architecture. We shouldn't hold on to architecture, buildings, or even concepts just because Walt Disney built them. Remember ... Walt's original TL was not much more than a collection of sponsored exhibits (Dutch Boy Paint, Bathroom of Tomorrow, et cetera). The '67 TL was purposely World's Fair-esque. Could you imagine if Walt had died in '56 and WED/WDI didn't go through on the World's Fair concept in '67 because that "wasn't what Walt built?"

I'm NOT championing a Discoveryland in Anaheim (just want to make that clear in case people get over-emotional and read half the post ), but I'm just saying it *could* work in Anaheim if given the budget/attention. I'd take a well-worked Discoveryland over a half-arsed version of a TL "renovation" any day!

Any renovation of TL (short of a full-fledged Discoveryland concept) is going to get dated at some point, in all honesty. The trick is to design attractions/adventures/environment that won't be COMPLETELY dated within 10-15 years.

Re: Tomorrowland to turn into discoveryland?

I agree that there's just not quite enough mythology or fictional stories associated with the American dreamers. Jules Verne and his contemporaries crafted works of fiction that were readily adapted to wonderful theme park elements, but there isn't as much that could be done with Edison and Bell and so forth. At least, not that I can think of. Perhaps some examples?

I think the Verne-based vision of Discoveryland is great, but I'm not sure I'd want it in Disneyland. It makes a lot more sense in Paris, where you're actually in that nation, and there's that sense of pride. However, I'd rather have Discoveryland - done right - than the sort of confused messes we've been seeing for the last 11 years. Vast improvements have been made, for which I am grateful, but there's a serious identity crisis in Tomorrowland, and even a cohesive theme that doesn't seem quite right for the park would be better than a mishmash of different themes.

But I agree that TL '98 should NOT be used as an example of why Discoveryland couldn't work. That's just evidence of the fact that without a big budget, a lot of creativity, good taste in color schemes and building materials, and a keen eye for thematic relevance, such a renovation is doomed to failure.
