Theoretically there's the bus that goes from downtown LA to disneyland. you could take it from disneyland to LA and then take the red line subway to universal. but the problem with that is getting back, i dunno how late that bus runs so you could get back to disneyland.

Actually there's apparently this too

It's the 460. It runs almost around the clock (does not operate between 1AM and 4AM, IIRC), and takes about 1h15m to get downtown.

There is a DL to USH shuttle that I beleive is free if you buy tix to USH.

I have no idea how to contact it though, I've only seen it cruising in the area (with the signage on it).

Maybe check with USH ticket sales or online?

Or the concierge at the Hotel?

Have fun!

In the past, and I can only assume they still have it, Universal offered tickets with free transportation from Anaheim. If memory serves it was about 50 dollars a person. Check the Universal webpage for offers.

Re: OT: Staying at Disneyland but want to go to universal

they dont have the free offer anymore. but this is the link to the company that provided the shuttle in the past, and still does. www.graylineanaheim.com.

they have packages available that include tickets and transportation.

imo though you should rent a car, if its in the budget. the problem with the shuttle companies is you'll be confined to the hours of the shuttle. so you may have to leave a bit earlier than you'd like to make the return shuttle down to anaheim. USH has CityWalk, which is open much later than the park and offers a lot to do like movies, bowling, indoor sky diving, night clubs, concerts, etc.

i would rent a car so you could have the most flexibility. despite rumors, LA traffic isnt ALL that bad, given you dont leave right at rush hour. and USH is a straight shot up from DL. take the 5 North to the 101 North and exit at USH just past downtown.

I would call the Grand Californian. They are usually very helpful and would have all the latest info. about shuttles, etc. The drive can take a long time, depending on time of day you'll be traveling. I'm not sure you'll be sneaking over for a morning, it will likely take you most of the day to make the trip and see the park.

How many people in your party?
Three or more, rent a car for the day.

Otherwise you can take a train from Anaheim to Union Station, then The Metro Red Line subway (as seen in "Speed" and "Independence Day"!) to The Universal station. Coming home, there is a last train. Maybe an Amtrak.

The Chartered Bus route will also have restrictions on time.

The MTA buses will be slightly more flexible.

Re: OT: Staying at Disneyland but want to go to universal

March 2008 my granddaughter wanted to go to Universal during the week we were spending at DL.

I booked online via GrayLine Tours...and it was so convenient. The bus picked us up at the DL Hotel, we did not have to wait in line at Universal to get in, and nice to just hope back on in the evening and relax and let them do the driving after a busy day.

I thought it was well worth the money.

Here is the information I have from our trip in 2008:

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS FROM DL

There are shuttles from the Disneyland Resort Hotels and other area hotels to Universal Studios. You need to buy the tickets from Grey Line.

Price:
Adult $80.00
Child 3-7 $70.00

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:
 Fully Narrated Driving Tour
 Priority Entrance upon Arrival to Universal
 Unlimited Access to Attractions, Rides and Shows
 Two Departures Daily - Approximately 9:15am & 11:15am

Approx. 11 hours

Universal Studios also has discount deals at their website if you want to provide your own transportation.

Shuttle runs twice daily, two morning departures and two evening departures.

Exclamation Re: OT: Staying at Disneyland but want to go to universal

make sure you check USH's hours prior to booking w/ Gray Line. right now their hours are 10am - 5pm. so if you took the 11:15am shuttle departure, you wont get to USH until after 12pm. that's leaving you less than 5 hours to do the park.
