Eighties NOS Fritters

Anyone remember these? My friend and I used to grab one of these babies -- gosh they must have been 1,000 calories -- at a little walk-up window near the Court of Angels (sp?). We'd nosh these (and maybe we had hot chocolate or coffee, too -- can't remember) there in the courtyard, and that was our "power breakfast" LOL Really got us charged up for our 17 hours in the Park.

Re: Eighties NOS Fritters

I totally remember these and I totally don't!

What I mean is that I remember that they used to sell them but if someone could describe what they looked like it would really help me remember them.

All I do know is that they were really good!

I think you got them at a window on the edge of Cafe Orleans. The windows are still there. Let me see if I can find a pic or a link...

I don't remember these...but I wish I did. They sound delicious! Anyone have any more information? What kind of fritters were they?

Re: Eighties NOS Fritters

I remember. And, I remember a NOS shop on that corner that used to sell things from New Orleans like beignet mix from Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, as well as coffee and chicory from there. MAN I miss those old, UNIQUE shops!

The batter consisted of flour, butter and eggs as I recall. You'd make a basic "roux" with the flour and melted butter, and then stir in the eggs. That would go into mixers to be made into a consistency like a thick cake batter.

Then you'd take a large ice-cream scoop of the finished batter, and drop it into a hot deep fat fryer...they'd then expand, and when done they'd be the approximate size of a softball, and golden brown on the outside. They'd then be rolled in sugar, and prepared for sale.

They were sold at both the "Royal Street Veranda" (the place you're thinking about in NOS, I think the place that now serves clam chowder in bread bowls) and also at the Mint Julep Bar adjacent to the French Market.

I wish I had a nickel for every batch I made...

Hope this helps.

Re: Eighties NOS Fritters

I am thinking these were beignets, not fritters. Am I wrong?

Re: Eighties NOS Fritters

They had beignets and fritters and the window was called "La Patisserie". You could also get this great dip to go with the beignets that was vanilla pudding with cinnamon applesause or at least that is how they told me to make it. I still have a couple of the wide orange fork thinks that you could get their fritters on.

I do too. Particularly in New Orleans Square. I also miss Pirate pistols and rifles made of wood and metal. (Damn the lawyers and their cautionary ways!) You know though, I'd honestly be happy just to see merchandise stay in their themed areas. No Jack Sparrow dreads in Tomorrowland, please!

(...and this is coming from Pirate Tim!)

Re: Eighties NOS Fritters

Mmmhmm ... you guys just made me hungry!

The side-window was La Petite Patisserie; they sold a variety of pastries ranging from some tasty baked goods on a stick to the fritters; as others have said, you could also find these doughy bits of love at Royal St. Veranda and the Mint Julep Bar.

La Petite Patisserie was also one of the first places in the park to sell espresso (even though the menu labeled it "expresso" ), cappucino, iced cappucino, and iced coffee.

In regards to the shop that sold different foodie items and mixes, the last few years of operation at The One of A Kind Shop (on Royal St between Royal St Veranda and Pieces of Eight) saw this kind of merchandise.

I had the trio of fritters on my last visit ... very tasty, but still nowhere near the originals.

On a similar note, I wonder if anyone remembers the lemon tarts that they used to sell at the Citrus House? Those were really good too!
