Haunted Mansion Facade Art

Hello folks,

I've been meaning to post this eventually, but never go around to it 'till now.

This was the final project for my drawing class last semester. The object was to use a photo and duplicate it in color. Naturally, I chose a Disneyland subject, the Haunted Mansion. I did it all in colored pencil on black paper, because that's the media that I'm best at. The black paper is what gives it that neat effect. It's about 16.5" X 18".

When I showed the teacher the photo I was going to be drawing off, she thought I would be working on it for too long because of the detail. (This was a basic drawing class, where that much detail wasn't needed for a project). As much as she didn't want me to do it, I did it anyways and knew it could be done, since the colored pencil media is nothing new to me (Ex: Ernest S. Marsh/ IASW Art; Ward Kimball Locomotive Art). I was able to knock out the drawing in 10 hours (two class sessions). The teacher was quite surprised when I finished it!

KAN, I did post it on my blog a while ago. I wasn't impressed with how the image was put together. (I had to scan it in sections because of it's size. Then I pieced it together in Photoshop, but the quality of the lines weren't good). I was able to redo the piece-ing together with a new feature I discovered called Photomerge, which automatically takes the pieces and put them together, adjusts distortions, and adjust the values all within a minute. That's a neat feature!

Very nicely done. Love the use of this particular medium, and the rendering is superb. There are some minor perspective issues, but I know from experience how tough it is to nail that in a drawing of this facade. Keep up the awesome work!

Love it, love it, love it! I really like your choice of medium for this piece, so dramatic with the black paper. You also did a good job with all of the shadows, very nice.

Oh, and the photo? Looks like this to me...

Yep, that's the one; I knew you'd get that! I got rid of the colored floodlights in the picture, to make it a little more spooky and to make it simpler and use less colors. That photo came from a very great Disneyland souvenir book from the 90's with quality photographs that has yet to be matched by the park's current books.

There are some perspective issues that I would have corrected, but since I wanted to base it off the photo that HBG2 posted, I drew everything angle for angle. The distortion must be from wide angle lens they probably used.

I'm trying to figure out where to frame and put it, but have no wall space at the moment! (Though, if I had wall space, I'd put my Kimball drawing up there as soon as I could; it's been in my flat file for nearly 3 years!)
