Question Tower of Terror Theme

Does anybody know what they are going to do about TOT's theme when they change the Hollywood Backlot's theme to 1920's-1930's? Because the theme of TOT is that it closed in 1929.......I think.

Re: Tower of Terror Theme

Interesting question. I hadn't thought about that. How unfortunate...something in DCA actually works wonderfully from a thematic perspective, and then an attempt to rectify the area around it ends up screwing with it! Oy.

Re: Tower of Terror Theme

Isn't the TOT themed around the early 30's?? It's still just enough within that time period that I think it could work...if not, then back to the drawing board....ugh.

Re: Tower of Terror Theme

But the idea is that we are visiting it in modern times, many years after the events that turned the hotel into what it is.

On a side note, I would really like to ride ToT right now. Haven't been on it in over a year, and it'd be fun right now. Oh well...

yeah, the idea of TOT is that we are visiting the hotel after its accident in 1939 (so the era in which the TOT is placed will fit in with the retheme of the backlot), but I think it would work to fit the time period. Guests would view it as right after the accident instead of in modern times...wow I hope that makes sense

I'd hardly say that Tower of Terror's theme works wonderfully.

Re: Tower of Terror Theme

The disaster happened in 1939. I've actually been wondering this myself. If they change the area to 1920s to 30s then the tower would be in perfect condition. But I'm sure that they (disney) doesn't expect the average guest to figure it out.

Well...it doesn't pay respect to California in any way, so it could very easily be argued that it doesn't belong in the park, but at least its Hollywood location makes it more appropriate than certain other things that have been and will be part of the park, and even if its theme is of debatable relevance, its theming is utterly brilliant. It's the only attraction in DCA that feels 100% like a Disney ride, through and through. (Soarin' would be there if not for the queue and loading area...)

Re: Tower of Terror Theme

The Tower is haunted and affected by the Twilight Zone... the normal rules of time and space simply do not apply when you enter the grounds.

In all practicality, however, is there any mention that it is modern times now? Or do they simply say, "now, on a night much like that one?" If it is the later, then it could simply be 1 year, 2 years, 5 years after the accident and everything is fine. If, however, they say, "70 years later, on a night much like that one," then there is an issue, but not an insurmountable one. That is simply changing a single line in the script.

"Hollywood 1939, amid the glitz and glitter of a bustiling young movie town at the height of it's golden age, the Hollywood Tower Hotel was a star in it's own right, a beacon for the show business elite. Now, something is about to happen that will change all that...

The time is now, on an evening very much like the one we have just witnessed. Tonight's story on the Twighlight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different type of intoduction. This, as you may recognize, is a maintainence service elevator, still in operation, waiting for you. We invite you, if you dare, to step aboard, because in tonight's episode you are the star. and this elevator travels directly to... The Twighlight Zone."

So in one way, they don't directly reference when Now is, they do strongly imply that now is the present day. However, I would say that if you can suspend disbelief to the point that you feel you are in 1940's Los Angeles, then no changes would really be necessary.

From what I have read, it appears that as you travel down BV street and make your way down into Hollywood and toward the TOT, you will essentially be travelling through time since, like a real city, the architecture will evolve as you go from the older parts of the city (1920's Buena Vista Street) toward the newer portions of town (1930's Hollywood to the 1940's in the TOT area.)

That could work, because based on if Disney succeeds (sp?) on making you believe you are in that time period, then it works fine. All the land needs is exceptional themeing to make you believe that you are in the late 20-early 30s. (That was the right period right?)

The only thing would be a minor tweak of a few years for the time the accident happened, and if they do it right, it won't affect anything but the script.

See I don't think anybody views this the way all of us do. I'm an extremely perceptive person, yet would have never caught onto this fact.

I think this could do amazingly well... you'll have Buena Vista street really getting you into the 20s, then move forward slightly to the 30s... yeah. This really could fit perfectly without any sort of change to the ride at all. Maybe a single word or two here or there.

Re: Tower of Terror Theme

Isn't the MGM-Disney Sudios (have they changed the name yet?) in Walt Disney World themed to the 30's? And Tower of Terror works perfectly there.

Re: Tower of Terror Theme

It fits in just fine. Disney is probably not going to do anything major to it since it already looks like it's from the late 30's.
