You really can't compare Everest to Mattahorn. It is two different rides and Everest is much better as a roller coaster.

Can't wait to hear what you think about DCA.

Glad you like the Matterhorn. It was my first rollecoaster and I still love it! It's more comparable to MK's Space Mountain in bumpiness. But I prefer matterhorn because I can anticipate the turns at least and keep the bumpiness to a minimal level.

Plus in space... it SHOULDN'T be bumpy at all!

This was wonderful so far. Can't wait for more.

You can't compare Matterhorn to anything really. It was the first tubular steel track coaster EVER, and the original "Disney Mountain" opened in 1959....of course something as new as EE is going to be "better", but on the Matterhorn, you are riding a real classic and the only one!

    great pictures!!!!

But, since I've only ever been to WDW...I have two questions...

    1. Where does that stairway in New Orleans square lead to?

    2. What is that ship on the first page? Does it move?

    1. Not sure which stairway you refer to, but all three lead up to the area directly above Pirates of the Caribbean. It used to be the Disney Gallery and I believe the stairway was the back entrance for Cast Members. Now it's the Dream Suite that is reportedly used by John Lasseter.

    2. That is the Sailing Ship Columbia and follows the same course the Mark Twain does around Tom Sawyer's Island. It's also used as a major set piece for the "Peter Pan" action sequence in Fantasmic!.

That is the Colombia, and it traverses the same course as the Mark Twain around the Rivers of America.

Re: Tasman goes to Disneyland - first time in 25 years!

Hi all - was busy during the weekend and now am back in Florida so will continue with the report. After escaping the abominable snowman, I wandered around Fantasyland for a bit. Such a beautifully themed environment. The best themed "lands" in a Disney park can be enjoyed for their architecture and landscaping alone, quite independent of their rides...and this is one of those lands. Is this the fairest Fantasyland of them all? I won't know for sure until I've been to Paris and Tokyo...but with its charm and detail, lush vegetation and top of everything, the Matterhorn for additional eye-candy...I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

The Fantasyland dark rides are crowded with wee ones and their parents at the best of times, so needless to say Spring Break was no exception. I wanted to try Toad and Storybookland but decided to leave them for another day (which will be either late 2010, or 2011), and got in line for Pinnochio instead, which had a reasonable 20 minute wait. Like most of the little Fantasyland rides except Peter Pan, the impression is one of unfulfilled potential. The ride is fun...but a bigger version, with better animatronics and sets, could do so much more justice to this great film. (Putting on my armchair imagineer hat for just a second...I think a Pinnochio E-ticket would be a great fit for Paradise Pier!)

After this, I felt like a dinner break...and thought I would try out the Blue Bayou. On the way over there, I stopped by Big Thunder, which had a less than twenty minute wait. I have heard the general opinion on this forum that the DL version is superior to the MK one. Honestly I didn't notice any big differences...just a few minor details here and there with regard to theming. They are both beautifully themed, relatively-mild-but-wild fun, just what a Disney coaster should be.

Dinner at the Blue Bayou was great. Yes it was super-pricey, but then I hadn't come to Disneyland with the intention of saving my pennies. Both the chicken-rice soup and crab cakes I had were very well done.

    A few Fantasyland pics:

This one reminds me of a time when Swan Boats used sail Orlando's MK:

Bummer you didn't tackle more fantasyland rides. I hope you saved them to do at the very end of the day. That's when they're shortest!

More coming tomorrow, gotta sleep now, it's 3 am, and I have to be up in 4 hours! Have no clue why I haven't gone to bed yet. But...I did return to Fantasyland that day, so no fear, a few more pics are in store! And also no fear for the ones I did skip...I will very likely be moving to LA on a long term basis next year, so I think I will be seeing a little more of DLR in the future

Tasman, thanks for continuing this wonderful trip report! Like everyone else, I'm really enjoying your comments about DL, especially your observations of visiting for the first time in 25 years.

I'll wait patiently for your next installment. The pictures and reading are worth the wait.
